Anyone have experience recording directly to a firewire drive with the 702t? Im wondering how much battery it will drain if the firewire drive is powered from the recorder mainly. and will a 5400 rpm drive be sufficient for recording 24 bit 48k? Thanks. |

The 702 is slightly different than the 722 (and higher), in that either the power supply for the unit, or a supply for the drive is needed. It will not power an external drive on battery alone. A 5400 RPM drive will work fine, but it has to be formatted correctly. I'm pretty sure it's fat 32, but check the manual.

The 788T-SSD version substitutes the hard drive with a 256 GB solid-state hard drive. Wonder how that is working compared to hard drives.

As Don as written, the 702 cannot power an attached FireWire hard drive using its internal battery (either requires the AC supply for the 702 or one for the HD). I have had excellent results with using a small 5400 rpm FireWire drive attached to my 702. I've recorded 24-bit/176.4kHz audio for hours with the external drive attached, while simultaneous writing to an internal Compact Flash card. You should not have any problems writing 24/48k audio to disk and CF. The attached drive is formatted FAT 32. |

Great! thanks for the info. now what would be cool is if i can find a battery pack that will power a firewire drive so i can make it fully portable. Would anyone happen to know of a batery powered Firewire HD? The 702 is so dang compact i would hate to have my kit tethered to a wall. |

While not exactly designed for the purpose, my FireLight portable FW HD has a jack for external DC. It is designed for a wall-wart, but you could easily adapt it to an appropriate voltage battery setup.
