Talking Paul McCartney to Appear on David Letterman

Paul McCartney to Appear on David Letterman
Quote:
When The Beatles made their U.S. TV debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ 45 years ago, Beatlemania ensued.

Paul McCartney is set to return to the Ed Sullivan Theater, only this time it won’t be as historic.

But it is the first time Sir Paul will appear on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman,’ when he drops by to chat with Dave and perform next Wednesday, July 15th.

my wife just called me to say that she was watching McCartney and band play outside of the theater on the street. They setup on the marquis. She said it sounded great and they were playing some old Beatles songs! Too bad I couldn't get there in time

I was a little taken aback by Paul's attitude and somewhat refreshed by his honesty at the same time. Dave's first question was a little pushy and and slightly angry -- about why they hadn't been able to get him on the show for 15 years regardless of how many times they tried -- but Paul answered by saying he didn't think the show was very good. The crowd (and laugh track) burst out in laughter like he was kidding, but then he said it again without cracking a smile. He wasn't joking.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Late Show, if someone 'cool' is booked, I'll watch. However, one of my music heroes came off a bit arrogantly. I guess he's entitled to that without it being a flaw, since he is the master. He obviously doesn't care or know about playing the celebrity kiss up game.

Good music from atop the marquee!

I would have said the same. The show really isn't good. I'll watch with good guests, or music, but the jokes aren't funny, Dave isn't funny, and most of the gags are really lame, even as Dave milks them for about an hour.

McCartney is too rich, too famous, and too old not to tell it exactly like it is. thumbsup

Because, as we all know McCarney is an all knowing comedy guru.

He's a brilliant songwriter, but when it comes to comedy, between the two of them, my vote goes to Dave.

Well, McCartney never said he was great. Give him a pat on the back and maybe he'll feel better about himself cos it came from you.

I only saw the news clips and it seemed OK, hard to tell really.
BTW He shouted to the office workers, who were watching from their windows,
"The shows over, so get back to work.... Suckers!"
Hmmmm.
Maybe all those years of being a PR kind a guy have worn off.
Great Song craftsman and Singer, that cannot be denied.

Well I guess that's what makes the world go round, I think the show is really good and most of the jokes are funny. I do miss "great Moments of Presidential Speeches". I think
McCartney was joking

I'd rather hear honesty than a suck up response any day. I also think people take him the wrong way occasionally because they don't understand dry British humor.

I don't see TV, so all I know about the interview I just read here. But I think Letterman is a below comment, just a TV host. MacCartney is right.

I haven't paid too much attention to McCartney since Band on the Run, but the marqee-top concert brought me new respect for him. He still has it! I real living Beatle!

Well you are in NY so you are biased.

To really know for sure we have to set up some sort of double blind test.

IMO - Macca is The true "King of Pop". And at 67, he's still singing his songs in their original key. Although, this year, I'm hearing a little faltering.

When do you think he should "give it up"?

Without question. Jackson was the "king of dancing in music videos" but that doesn't sound quite as catchy as "king of pop". Titles like that aren't about truth of course, it's about what sounds catchy and what's easy to remember.

Well I'm not even in the states, but I also think Dave is a great broadcaster.

Not that it matters really, but I agree that Macca could have been joking a little when he said he didn't like the show. It looked like he was about to say something to follow up the "I don't like the show" comment, but he was interrupted and the conversation went in a new direction.

Never! I think he might be ok with dying onstage, doing what he enjoys. Paul probably isn't touring because he needs the money.

Dylan's voice doesn't sound that great anymore, although many people will say he never sounded good. Should he give up?

I watched it as well as the extended 5 song concert which you can find at TV.com,

Anyway the guy still has it live and his band rock, I mean how can you go wrong with Wix Wickens on keys and Abe Laboriel Jr on drums.

What I love about McCartney live is that he some how pulls off his songs without making them feel nostalgic, plus the new song was killer. Like Bob Dylan he is doing some of his best work of his (solo) career on his past 3 albums or so.

Anyway, as to the interview, his comment that he did not like the show is nothing more or less than McCartney's sense of humor which he has displayed for years in interviews, the Beatles were always highly sarcastic in public interviews.

Now my only compliant is that I thought Dave's questions where awful, I mean...it was total Beatles 101 crap...how about some questions about Electronic Arguments or his life now...just my opinion.

Overall nice to see the real King of Pop in action.

Well, it was a live concert and we watched a recording. How ON topic is that? Completely.

Only difference is everyong is talking like fans enstead of engineers. I would love to hear about the tech involved, who engineered it, and stuff like that. My partner and I enjoyed trying to identify the mics used, why they used 58s for vocals, and liked seeing Audix D4s (we have three of them) on the toms...

And how when the audince mics were on (any time the music stopped) you couldnt understand a word he said...

McCartney's putdown was in classic Beatle's deadpan form. Surprised we're even wondering about it...but then again, modern artists usually play the kissass game, something the Beatles only ever played on their own terms. In yer face irreverence. Breath of fresh air. And even funnier that he pushed it once again...

Sure hope I can look that good and still rock out at 66. That was a powerful performance, not a wobbly old man kind of thing. Great to see the Greats still walking the earth.
