Talking Steely Dan at Hammersmith Apollo last night...

Amazing set as to be expected, they opened with a super-laid-back slow-groove almost unrecognisable version of "Reelin' In The Years"

Rest of the set was great - every song was great and recognisable and it would be easier for me to list the hits they didn't play - that would be "Do It Again," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "FM."

Particular standouts were "My Old School" and "Deacon Blues," with the 8-piece band plus 3 backing singers in full groove mode for the latter.

Anyway, surprise time - first encore, Donald Fagan admits they haven't played the album version of Reelin' In The Years "for years" (and they'd already played another version of it of course!) - but since Elliot Randall lived in London they might as well bring him on to play it with them. On he wanders.

Jesus C****, the house came down... amazing!!!

He stuck around for Kid Charlemagne, too, which closed the show.

One of the best gigs I've seen ever!!

I saw them back in 06 I believe in New Jersey. One of the best shows I've ever seen. What an amazing group of musicians.

saw them in 96 in Hamburg where the sound sucked big time and the band played rather mediocre. Saw them again in Düsseldorf in 2000 with a totally different lineup and that was the best gig i ever.
Saw them 2 years ago in Bonn/open air and it was a good one.
It really depends on the lineup and the venue but Don and Walt always rock.
Too bad they are not playing germany this year.

They played in Paris last night. I didn't go as tickets were quite expensive. I saw them 2 years ago here and the show was great. Do anybody go last night here in Paris?

The show in Rome should be great as I think it's in a smaller outdoor setting !

I saw the show in Montreux last saturday (July 4th). In short: brilliant!
They also took off with the revisited "reelin' in the years" .
Other tunes I remember (in no particular order): Aja, Josie, Show Biz Kids, Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Glamour Profession, Time Out Of Mind, Parker's Band, Two Against Nature.
Kid Charlemagne as encore.
Not sure if they did Home At Last and Night By Night, or if that's just wishful thinking. My personal list of tunes they should have played is about 5 times that long (ok, about 95% of their discography).Apparently it pays to see them several times, as they seem to change the setlist around a lot.

The band were fantastic, as a group AND as soloists: many solos note-for-note like the record versions.

I had the opportunity/honor to meet and work with Keith Carlock on a drum clinic several months back, and besides being super-cool and easygoing, he practically invented "the pocket" (or he should have). On several occasions during the show, he practically disappeared behind other rhythm instruments, he was THAT TIGHT.

My 1st SD show, but definitely not my last, if I can help it.
