Talking Korg MR-1 Reliability?

My MR-1 died. Just went through hell getting a check from guitar center's evil warrantee company. Evil repair guys trying to screw both the warrantee company, me, AND KORG! yada yada.

was thinking of buying a different recorder but it's a little more interesting now that I've noticed that I have a check for 700 bucks and theres been an almost 500 dollar price drop on the piece!

Was it a fluke that my MR-1 died? suggestions for other pieces?

My main gripe with everything else is that the capacities are poop with the SD cards etc etc. Korg MR-1 was a whopping 20 gb. But I think XLR ins may be a new deciding factor since I'm coming to the realization that my weakest link was the mics I was using. i really want something that can live on my belt loop for the rest of it's life.

Most new recorders will take SDHC cards for up to 16GB of space. Of course you must pay for the card. For that much cash I'd personally buy a Zoom H4n ($350) and find a good price on two 8GB cards if you need that much space for about $30 (rather than shell out double that for one 16GB), and keep the extra!

I used to avoid Zoom like the plague but I am really amazed at how good my H4 sounds, and have really thought about getting the H4n now. It's more flexible than the MR-1 with the actual XLR inputs.

BTW, I'm very surprised they refunded your money rather than just give you a new MR-1, since that would obviously be cheaper for the company!

Thanks for the advice that sounds like a very plausible option. Those bastards owe me twice what I got for the hell they put me through. Audio repair, I've found, has implausibly horrible service to begin with but add guitar centers warranty company on top of that? Well that's a huge big ball of straight up capitalism downsides right there. Clocked well over 8 hours of hold time. Possibly 12

Wow yeah pretty bad - I had a keyboard go bad 5 timesin the year warranty I had from M-audio, and they held it in "Repairs" for months. GC was complicent in all of that.

Anyway, good luck. I really think that you can't go wrong with the Zoom, unless recording in DSD means something to you.

The H4n is excellent for the price. Would be a good replacement for the MR-1 for sure, much more versatile and very easy to use. I have recorded some nice stuff even through the built-in mics. Plus you have standard XLR and 1/4" inputs. Supports 96/24 when recording stereo, 48/24 when in 4-input mode, and 44.1/16 when in multitrack mode. Also supports HC SD cards.

I have bought other recording gear but am keeping the H4n regardless, simply because it's a great device overall.

Here is a clip I stumbled upon from another member here using external mics:
