This is a little off topic for this Forum, but I thought I'd share my experiences of the last three days. I traveled to Long Beach on Thursday to meet a friend, Katie, who was over from Hawaii doing a gig for Sutherlin Audio. She was A1 on a large line array PA for the 2009 Commencement Ceremonies at UC Irvine. Now, I just went to visit her, hang with her, and did not expect to work - I brought no gear with me at all. However, circumstances being what they were, I ended up the A2 on the job! I haven't worked with a state of the art large venue PA system since the mid '70's. This particular rig was being used in a 5600 seat venue to provide prerecorded music, vocal reinforcement, and for sending a feed to a camera crew for UC Irvine's 2009 graduation ceremonies. The system belongs to Russ Sutherlin, and is apparently one of his medium sized rigs. It was fronted with a Midas Venice 320 mixer, Klark-Teknik EQ's and crossovers, Rane crossovers, QSC power (25,000 watts), and two E/V eight element line arrays (with two flown subs per side). There were two smaller custom built line arrays next to the main L/R arrays providing side fill. I was struck right away by the effortless clarity of the system along with it's superb coverage. Wow!!! The rig sounded to me very much like an excellent studio monitor system. Katie told me it could sound even better with a "real Midas console". Here's a shot or two (or more) of the weekend.....

That looks like an XLD (or maybe XLC) rig. I'm a big fan of the EV line arrays. Sounds like a good gig, even if you didn't plan on it. I built a 40x20 stage and 80' of truss the other day unexpectedly. Same as you, just visiting a friend and a crew member didn't show.

I've been a E/V fan since 1970 when I first heard a Sentry 2A system with a Sentry 4 center cluster. This system reminded me a lot of that early memory! | |

By the way, I'm the gal in the glasses. Katie is the one who knows what she's doing! |

I know the "Suck" slider is for the last day on the job. When does the "Talent" slider get used? ROTFLMAO ;o)

Wow, those QSC amps are bulletproof. I think I see a mix of MXa series and MX series - all long discontinued. We replaced ours with something lighter, but all still work! |
