I have a request to do sound and video for political event next weekend. My camera is Canon GL1. GL1 external mic input is a 1/8 stereo unbalanced jack. I tried the mixer tape outs to camera but it's too hot and has some noise. All my DIs are balanced outs. So before I breakout the soldering iron to make some bal-unbal cables does anyone know where I can get a DI box with unbal outs?? (or any other ideas) Thanks Steve |

You need to pad the audio inputs to your camera or you can buy or rent a BeachTek device. The BeachTek is exactly what you need!

The Beach Tek does look perfect. It's just the cost of investing more money in this old camera. I love my GL1 though. Thanks |

I can dig that.. Why not rent it instead or pad down the inputs to the camera? |

I did pad down the level and set the input level to att in the camera but I still got the noise and the levels were kind of jumpy. I'm sure the camera is just looking for a lower impedance device to drive it.

How many dB attenuation did you use? -40dB is what you should try. I assume the mic input impedance for your GL1 is 600 ohms and I bet your line output impedance is at 10k ohms with a nominal output of -10 dBV. Build a "roll-your-own cable with the proper series resistance between the mixer and the GL1 and the proper resistance shunting the GL1 input might be just the right trick for your situation. We need some technical techiness to confirm the proper ohm values for the series and shunting resistors. Duh, what did I just say? I have no idea. |
