We need more information to answer you properly.

Are you talking about looking for work independently or as a sound company?

If you were going for tour work in live sound it really does matter what city you live in.

As an independent I would send out feelers to all the sound companies you may want to work with and see which ones bite.

Then consider moving to a city where your favorite live sound companies are based out of.

It DOES matter when you are starting out and trying to connect with a band. You need MAXIMUM exposure if you are wanting to pick up a tour. After you are established, however, it does NOT matter. People will call you and you can fly to wherever the tour is starting.

I am in the process of moving from New Jersey because I have found that I cannot be sustained by being a freelance sound technician. The winters are too cold and concerts are put on hold until summer. The last 3 years I have worked 7 days a week for 3 months of the year. For around 4 months it's sparse (mostly weekends), and for the rest of the year I sit at home making cables and watching TV. There are a TON of sound companies in the area so starting a new company would be a mistake (unless you are going for arena work and investing $250,000 in a PA off the bat). You'll never compete with all of the bottom feeders around here.

I am moving to Nashville after the summer in hopes for more continuous work. Maybe it's better, maybe not, but at least the winters don't last 4 months in the South. Anyway, that's my story. Maybe you can extract something useful from my rambling. As Steve said, if you can give us more details it would help a lot. There are people from every corner of the country (and world) on this forum so I'm sure you will get a diverse range of opinions.

Good luck!
