Warm Regards,

It's interesting how the "right way" can sometimes be wrong.

I designed a piece that is part of the angled ceiling rack system in Elroy.
35 (which included a few extras) of these puppies needed to be fabricated.

My carpenter interpreted my design slightly different, but he already made the pieces.
We were going to figure out a work around, but when we did a dry run install the "mistake" turned out to be better than the original design. It turned out to be a much cleaner look.

The carpenter and I both agreed that they looked really good, so we installed the faux pas pieces with excellent results.

The rack system looks awesome!

I am in the "first learn the rules" camp. I am new at this and must know what will work. Then, starting from the "known" I can branch out into the "unknown." If I were to start from the unknown Iwould have to rediscover what a century of technicians have already discovered; to reinvent the recording "wheels." I am too old for that crap.

I do mostly "guerilla" recordings in bad venues with little time to set up. It works most of the time because I use basic, proven approaches. I recently experimented with a William three card mic array he uses for three channel playback. I figured I could use it also for creating a two channel recording. But I did piggyback a Schoeps Mk8 onto the center Mk4 just to make sure that if the three card array was a bust that I would at least have a M/S copy. Both worked.

That's the way to do it.
Darn good thinking too!

I had a gig last week, Hammer dulcimer, flutist, vocalist. I had an sdc stereo coincident pair, and two LDC close mics, both worked, we can edit based on performance instead of screwups.
First time I've fired up the location rig for music. Sounded awesome.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.

Your mindset is totally on point; learn the rules first, then consider breaking them, but…

IMO, if you did something wrong and it came out great don’t blow it off just because you know it was wrong. If it sounded good go with it. You can always backwards engineer the situation to figure out what went wrong that sounded so right.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way of doing something until it’s a complete mistake.

…And, this doesn’t matter if you have the knowledge or not –whether it is right or wrong is only relative to the final result you achieved.
