Hi all, I have recently relocated to NYC and am looking to get busy doing some remotes! I am interested in anything small and acoustic from jazz to strings to choral and marimba. I have got in touch so far with the New York Chamber Music Society, but they have their regular recording engineers so I would love for any New Yorkers on this forum to throw me some suggestions on how to find some performances (or even rehearsals) to record. I am still quite new to this as my background is in recording for film and TV. At the momet I have a pair of Sennehiser MKH406 cards and a pair of Schoeps MK41's and plan on acquiring some omnis and a J-Disc in the very near future. My recorder is a Sound Devices 744 + 4 channels of Sound Devices preamps. Any advice or anyone who knows of some groups that want recordings.. I'm all ears! And I'm not looking to make a profit off it! Last edited by bigcitysound; 22nd May 2009 at 03:41 PM.. Reason: spelling |

I am in Washington DC, not New York City, but I do visit up there a lot as I have two siblings who both live there. One thing I am always reminded of when I visit there is the huge theater scene, especially all the smaller and "off broadway" stuff. One thing you could try is contacting some of these productions (the more musical ones) with the offer of doing a "cast recording" for them. It seems to me that having a well done CD of the music from the production would be a great thing for them to sell to folks on their way out, and could maybe add some much needed revenue for these types of productions. Thanks!

Yay! Just what this city needs - another guy with great equipment who "doesn't need to make a profit." ![]() I am good friends with the guy who does CMS of Lincoln Center. If I catch you poaching any of his (or my) clients, you'll be swimming in the east river with cement shoes before you can say "viola." Just kidding (sort of), but please do all of us who DO need to make a living at this a favor - charge a reasonable rate for your services. Or go back to film work - Lord knows there's plenty of that sort of thing going on around here. Look on Craigslist and you'll find lots of want ads for sound guys with equipment for no pay. Else, hook up with Steiner, Silvercup or KAS. If I can't pay my rent doing this, the only other thing I am qualified for is flipping burgers or breaking legs (breaking legs pays better, but the retirement plan sucks...). I will not be a happy camper. Welcome to New Yawk. Don't make me whack you.

Hey Loco Dont worry I am making a living doing film and TV stuff.. and certainly dont want to be poaching anyones clients. The problem is I dont have much experience recording music and with stereo mic placement etc, so its not fair for me to charge the big bucks.Maybe you can give me an idea what I should be charging for recording services, so that I'm sure to not be undercutting?? And hey, NY is a pretty big city anyway, there are always going to be low key gigs that you and your friends are not interested in, right?? I am looking for a starting point here, a way to practice something I'm really interested in. Also remember you had to get your start doing this at some point, right? And there are always going to be older established guys that dont want guys like me around, and thats fine too. I'm just looking for any constructive advice I can get here. |
