Simple... lets just take the recording from SNL and the one from Colbert and see if they pass a null test.

If you can't spot when a band is **NOT** lip syncing how in the world are you going to ever do something far more complex? , like record a song...

I didn't catch anything strange about the performance because I was stuck on two things...

one, it was the first time I'd heard that new song and all I could think was, "if this is the single, what's the rest of the record like?"

And two, that second guitar player has been with them since at least around or before American Idiot... why can't he be an official band member yet?

Just saw this last night

No way that was lip sync'd....

Click track maybe as the drummer appeared to speed up at the very beginning. Otherwise it was done live in my opinion.

very well done

in the bridge Billy Joe quoted a section of one of Colbert's spoof songs.
Beef and The Constitution, WW II and the Revolution etc........

did not appear to be a lip sync. Besides....They would have had to record a new vocal track and lengthen the bridge in the backing tracks for what seemed a pretty spontaneous joke. Not likely on their schedule.

I commented to my wife that I thought he might be lipsynching too. Though at the end as they cut to commercial, you can see another guy side stage who also had a mic. So maybe they were doing a live double of the lead vocal?

Depending on the teleproduction needs, the bands or artists may record a new live version of the song they'll be performing. Sometimes it's on location on the set of the show; sometimes it's on location somewhere else.

The idea is to have a a live sounding track to lip sync to.

I have been involved with this sort of practice.
Some TV producers think it keeps the sound continuity together for the show.

Hey, believe it or not, many bands/artists actually perform their songs live...

Crazy stuff for sure, but it's true.

I saw this performance last night, and it didn't seem like a lip sync to me either. I've seen the band by chance on pretty much every late night talk show this past week as i've been flipping though the channels; pretty solid performances and great sound. I haven't been crazy about the songs I've heard so far, though the one that they played on Letterman I really liked.

Enough with the lip synching debate

This debate is foolish. Green Day sounds really, really good live. Lip syncing is quite obvious. I've watched the Colbert video many times. Point out a mins:sec part where you think there is lip syncing. I also really liked the cover of Colbert's tune in the middle of "Know Your Enemy." That was pretty great.
