Question Using a channel strip with live mixer?

Hi,

I've read most of the old threads on this topic and just have a few questions. For live sound in our band we use 2 QSC HPR122i's and 2 HPR 181i's and an Allen&Heath PA12 mixing desk. I had planned to ugrade the desk from the offset but had to compromise at the time. I was wondering if it's possible to bypass the preamps and eq on this desk with a channel strip like the Presonus Eureka? Would this greatly improve the sound?

Also, I plan to upgrade the desk anyway as we really need a 16 channel desk so I was wondering if the Allen&Heath Mixwiz would make a substantial sonic improvement over the PA12 or should I just keep saving and get a GL2400?

Would the Eureka through the PA12 sound better than using the preamps in the more expensive A&H desks? If this was the case I would just get the Eureka now and upgrade the desk further on down the line as it would still be useful with a better A&H desk.

Cheers.

I would not waste your time w/the Eureka...it's not really a step up...and live it's not really worth running outboard preamps in clubs anyway. I like the Allen and Heath GL range a lot for live sound on the cheap. Get a couple decent compressors instead...I like 166xl's just fine for live. I actually prefer the Allen and Heath (and Mackie) preamps over the Presonus (by a huge margin)...even if I was recording vocals and that was all I had to choose from(thank god it's not though)!

Thanks mate. Yes i thought it would probably be a waste of money. Allen&Heath on the cheap is the GL range? Thats highend as far as im concerned.Lol. I already use the TC C300 compressor for vox and it's great. I just thought I could improve the pre and free up the comp for something else like kick for instance. But yeah I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and get the GL 2400. Problem is I got the Apogee duet for recording and I've heard what a good preamp can really sound like and I'm lookin for that kind of quality. I suppose live music is a different ball game though. Cheers.

you can plug a golden age pre73 in the line input. that would be real improvement, and not expensive. or,spend some more $ for a summit 2ba-221 or safe sound p1. greets
