Talking Is this the best way?

I have a festival gig on Friday.

I've yet to record something off a 150-200' cable run.

I'm assuming my best outcome will be if I place my mic pre near the stage and run the signal hot through the house wiring up to the booth where I will be recording.

Is this the best option? I see the downside as not having control of the pre, but the upside is that the signal will be cleaner, yes?

I may be wrong, but I don't see any issue with a 200 foot cable run straight off the split before the pres. All I own is a 200 footer and have a good split, a good snake and nice pres and things sound fine to my ears.

Use a decent quality snake and you'll be fine. You certainly don't want to be running 400' every time you need to adjust a preamp.

FYI I can't control what the snake is... its whatever is in the house (a high school in this case).

So you're saying: try keeping the pre upstairs with me?

Then make sure you check every channel before you commit to using it. Even if it's someone else's gear that goes down, it's still your fault in the end.

Yep. Unless you have a trusted associate and a com system. But you should be fine with this setup.

The recording went very well except my pre died, so I ended up using the pre on the Mini-me... I forgot how decent that is. I used the Schoeps MK21s on two poles and took a feed off the house system so I could pick up the soloists. Got a good-enough mix with my AB pair which went straight to CD-R -- that's what the bands got as they received their plaques. 18 High School and Middle School Jazz Ensembles (long festival day-- my first).

I did a quick mix for the host band director after the show... boss was verrrrry pleased with his band's recording! It helps that they play well, but he said "You make my band sound amazing". Hey.. that's what I'm here for!

Thanks for your help on this.
