Hi! I have to record a Boesendorfer grand piano for a (really!-)small budget short film, and we've got only that pair of chinese large valve mics (SE Z 5600). Do you think it would be possible do get any usable results? It doesn't have to be audiophile, but we don't want a too cheap and amateur-sounding recording. Which mic-placing would be advisable to get the best results? The room is a nice-sounding mid-size concert room, but remember: just two mics! ![]() Thanks for any help, Sebastian |

No reason why these wouldn't work well at all! You will be fine. Check out the sound on sound article on recording a grand piano. Lots of good info on mic placement. I just recorded a grand piano as part of a live concert. For fun I put two rode nt55 with omni capsules spaced inside the piano. The results were very good. A little too close for most work but still very nice. I think I'd use yours in omni mode (if the room is good) and spaced but not too close in. Try to find a position that captures the sound of the piano and a little of the natural ambience of the room (once again assuming you want the room ambience as part of the recording) Goodluck! |
