I've been doing some outdoor recordings lately - primarily sfx and ambiences (no dialog) and I'm interested in picking up a pair of Rycote baby ball gags. Through my day job, I generally have access to a variety of microphones with different diameters (though I don't have access to all of them at the same time). What I'd like to do is just buy one pair of ball gags and be able to use them on any microphone (within reason), but I don't know how flexible the grommets are (can a 19-20mm accommodate a 21mm mic?), whether or not the grommets are interchangeable, or whether I can put something (e.g. a rubber band) around a skinnier microphone to make it wide enough to sit properly in a bigger grommet. I've seen plenty of guys just put gaff tape on skinny SDC's to get them to fit in a 57 clip or vice versa, stretch an undersized clip to fit a 57 - and while not being "pretty" it often gets the job done. Just by looking at the pictures, though, I get the impression that the tolerances on a ball gag are a lot tighter than that and hacking it may not work. Thoughts? -Dan. |

I was using some last year on some standard Schoepes CMC bodies, as I remember they have a flexible rubber gasket not unlike the softie. I would imagine that there is a certain amount of play for 2-3mm, but easy enough I would give them a call, I've always found them to be very helpful. Regards Roland |
