If you like Reverberant Rooms you will love the Reverb sound in the "Autobahn" Tunnel

Hi fellow slutz,

I´ve been to the studio 2 weeks ago as a client, which I liked because It was a no brainer just to play drums and be creative...to cut a long story short, I wantet to redo an experiment I did with a mate when I was 19.

We (a mate and me) recorded drums in an Autobahn Pedestrian Tunnel (after midnight), with cars driving 200 km/h above our heads. We recordet that with an Md Player...and it was the boomiest thing I´ve ever heard. So it had to be on our next album. We (my current band: Jovernanté) descided to drive to the tunnel to record a drumtrack for an epic ballad...and we did it...

About the tunnel:

the tunnel is about 30m (90ft) long, 4m (12ft) wide and 3m (9ft) high. Steelreenforced concrete. All freqs. at around 50 to 80Hz have a feedbacktime of about (no kidding) 10-12 sec.

Gear used:
Due to the lack of liverecording equipment we used our laptop a toneport and a Sennheiser MD421 faced to the wall to get sort of a "preassur zone mic" effect. Drumwise I played a 26 inch Premier Gen X BD, an 8 inch deep Pearl Master Birch Snare and a 22" Paiste 2002 crash with a Wuhan flat Gong (24") ...switched between brushes and rods.

I played over the preproduced low end demo track,which you will hear in the mp3.It´s hardly Panned to have an idea what the song is.

Cymbals seem very load but couldn´t avoid it really (played with sticks and it was deafening:-)

Have fun with it. I´ll post the song when it´s mixed and ready for mastering....because we (Jovernanté on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos) need a good Mastering Engineer.

kind regards

be careful!!!! the drumpart is way louder than the pilot track!!!!!

thanx alot norsehorse.

a shame that I am not mixing on our own album (exept drums, which will be retracked when my siemens desk is ready to rumble)...but I probably would compress the hi mids, as they sound very brutal to my ears....but otherwise I love the rich epic sound of the swelling Gong and the almost white noisish sounding walls of vibrating cymbal brass...

I would love to do another session down there at night, when the traffic is down to 5 cars per minute. Any recommendations on field recording mics???

I think about a singer with an acoustic guitar....cars, birds and owls should be heared as well (the album is about the "way out of the dead urban enviroment)

problem is I don´t own any portable tracking device with phantom power...and the studio owner won´t give us the M149 anyway...

What do you guys think about the MD421 (or maybe an MD441).

regards

chris

Brilliant!

I love the cars zooming past. They *almost* sound deliberate in places.

Did you consider setting up the drums facing down the tunnel towards the opening instead of towards the opposite parallel wall?

Yes I did...

probem is, it´s like a shotgun....and when I faced the Bassdrum to the exits it lost its boomieness.

But that is a subjective impression...of cours you´ll have a strange slap back around 80Hz +oct but It has been blown out to the sides...due to the lack of time (batterywise) we couldn´t move stuff around that much....

I also would love to try, putting the mic at one end of the tunnel and the sound source at the other site...as the sound can´t escape anyway...
I have to admit that a room with hard surfaces, which is open to both ends isn´t that bad....(actually quiet good)

You may want to try Naiant omni mics. Naiant Studio

Some of them can be powered even by a PC soundcard so I'm sure you'll find something to meet your needs. Give the owner an email - he's a really helpful guy.

Sounds insane!

I'm a happy clam (baltic, right?) with a tascam 122l for mobile, shoot them 2nd hand. Just have to ignore the initial "current draw"-warning on my acer "Faltkalkulator".

LoL faltkalkulator!!! Leuchtbuch!?

Thanks...I would like to have more channels...What about the fireface 400/800. I use rme converters in my project studio. Like the reliability of those units. Are they any good for mobile recording???

I thought that from an artistic standpoint that the drum sound fit the song tempo and melody. The cars driving overhead was icing on the cake that gave a sense of rawness and character. I'd like to hear a final mix. Very cool idea.

thank you guys...

It´s great to share ideas...and to (finally) gain some respect for it.

The fun behind this is, that it came out of the blue and was shitty prepared and recorded...

Could have used a condenser, and tried more placements...but we just had no time for it.

I think some of you could do even more epic stuff with more time and rocket science...

regards

i adore this. the gunshot verb on the snare is insane. but the cymbals get to be too much though imo.

have you considered recording at home then bring monitors and power generator/battery to reamp and use it as an echo chamber effect?

might be less dramatic, but more controllable.

@teddy

The tunnel and studio are situated in a village right in the middle of Germany.

Das Familienwappen

I live in wismar (near hamburg) but worked 4 years in the backline rental company (Untitled Document) which is part of the studio (or the other way around). small studio but 40+ kits, 50+ amps, 50+ synths, etc to play with...priceless IMO

...why did you live in schwetzingen (army??)? or girl

@audiovisceral

thought about doing a 4 piece string quartet, with 2 shoeps (in AB or XY) down there...but reamping...mmm...sounds intresting...I consider this in our next sessionthumbsup

@javanderplough

Hey Man! I was in Die US-Armee Europa SoldatenChor for half of the time, the other half was spent as an Infantryman. ( Feldwebel)

Uhhhhhhhhhh
Crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Maybe it would be even cooler to just record the drums in there and overdub the cymbals later?!?!!?!?

But anyways, crazy verb! I like it!

@Teddy

Cool...like Elvis.

@Jaques

Great idea! couldn´t avoid all the cymbal noise...tried the mic on the floor to have sort of a half cardioid character and less reflexions from the seeling (and from that to the floor into the mic), but the cymbal bleed was loud on all positions I have tested.

Next Time I´ll test it right on the entry of the tunnel to pick up the traffic noise from above and the drums in the tunnel....

What about putting an 8 - 12 piece orchestra in the middle an mic from both entries...with a pair of condensers (shoeps, gefell, neumann, oktava etc.)
should sound evil!!!

I like evil orchestration

muhaha

Oh man I have to go back in this tunnel...for at least a day and do a whole drumsession for the album...

thought about getting:

a generator
our revox 8 track
A&H Mix Wizzard
Mike the Kit (BD, SN, Hi hat, OH) and two mics from each site of the tunnel...about 10m away from the kit....(may delay it back a little)
get some blankets and matrazzes(??) around the kit..

and done deal...

same thing with the string quartet and the trumpets

fun fun fun...

Now it´s getting crazy....yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahh!!!! that´s what I like. Neither heard a doppler drum nor in a tunnel....great idea....but you have to use quiet wheels...rubber ones.....mmmmm

I will try that.

Actually we did that with the gong during the take.....my singer ran around with the gong...but I messed up the beat in that take.

I need something like this:

I think a have to find a tunnel here in north germany and do a session with you jaques
