Talking live compresssion

I know tracking is different than live but today i was doing a live show and this guy is a screamer. I had his ratio on 8:1 threshold at about -36db and gain at about 8db make up,but htis seemed like alot but I realize its a whole lot different than tracking. is this normal for live compression. What is some of yalls parameters for compression on live screamers?

I am lucky that I generally get to work on nice live rigs, so I approach live compression the same as recording compression.

The same goes for EQ.

What-ever works!

I like to use the peak limiter on my Drawmer DL241 for screamers. I'll use 4:1 with about 5-6db of gain reduction, then put a ceiling on it with the peak limiter.

I usually use milder ratios (up to about 4:1) and start them lower.

For scremo acts, I like the limitter idea. Also, turn him up in his monitor with no compression. Nothing like aversion theropy to induce good mic technique....

This guy told me he uses compression to reduce feedback. Can someone explain this because I thought compression will increase the size of the pick up pattern so I would think that would increase feedback problems?

when we practice, i find to much compression can make feedback worst but a tight gate on the vocals really helps.

...yes that's too much compression...you should be able to mix a screamer without any compression....find the loudest point, gain accordingly and ride that fader..and remember if you are going to use compression, make sure that compression is not going to the monitors...you can achieve this in any club by strapping the compression over sub groups and assigning your vocals there, avoiding compression over the individual channels.

On feedback...compression in the monitors will cause you more feedback in most cases

I use similar settings to labrat. About 4:1, -10db and limiter on.

No comp in monitors as it increases feedback chance and will feel unnatural to vocalist on stage.

I either bring the comp back on a new channel or insert it over a sub group.

I never use comps or limiters on a vocal in stage monitors.
On rare occasion compression is helpful on a vocal for In-Ear mixes.

Compression will NOT help to suppress feedback.

Agreed to not send compression to monitors. I can't imagine how it would help feedback, quite the opposite. I've been running parallel comp for vox lately and am liking it, I just route the vox to L\R and a subgroup with compression, even then I'm taking off maybe 6db or so. Ride those faders damn it, you're mixing!
