Hi guys. Long time lurker, just never found reason to register until now. Can someone recommend a rack mountable mic split? I can't recommend anything if I haven't installed one before. Until now, I've been asked to recommend and install a split because they are going the way of FOH + Monitor console. They still haven't decided if they are going 24 ch or not, but most likely are. I appreciate a recommendation, guys. Thanks |

Do you mean a split snake or a stage box with a split? Whirlwhind Redco Gepco won't be cheap either.... |

The design that is going on in my head is the multi pair wires from those boxes are going to run to a rack mounted split in close proximity to the Monitor console. The split outputs then go to their respective FOH and Monitor console. I've worked in that sort of environment before, I just never bothered to look at the brand name or anything to get an idea. Or where I could or should buy one from. Thats basically what I'm asking. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on my question. EDIT: Thanks to dbbubba. I guess what I'm looking for is 3 Whirlwind SPC82's. Anyone have experience with that or something similar? Or anyone have any other similar recommendations?

Those will do fine. Ultimately you want something with Jensen transformers, but it isn't an absolute must have thing. |

At the top of the quality scale are: Klark Teknik DN1248 but whirlwind will do the job admirably.

In my experience, most if not all monitor-foh splits are hard-wired Y splits without transformers. I've almost never seen an installation that uses transformers and/or active splits unless they have decided to provide a third recording split as standard. Not that I'm saying they shouldn't technically use transformers, but I guess most venues and PA companies have never found the need to spend the extra cash. It's worth carefully investigating the various ways that people build monitor-world patch panels, as there's a bit of an art to it (e.g. worthwhile options like multiway outputs, subsnake inputs, parallel male XLR outs) and because it's so labour-intensive it's something you want to get right the first time. Radial's custom department can build units like this to your specification. |

If you are absolutely, positively certain the a.c.power/ground scheme is shared between FOH and MON, then the parallel "Y" split snake box system will work just fine , usually in a fixed situation but also in a temporary/remote setup, too. Some older snakes with two Amphenol/Socapex milspec trunk connectors leaving the box, are wired this way . If the power is not shared, then isolation transformers are pretty much mandatory if you want to avoid amplified ground hums in the p.a. & monitors. WWind makes very good solutions, with and without signal ground lift switches - the Jensen and Lundahl transformers are close $100 each channel but worth it because they preserve HFs and reject RF noise. Try the different methods with 1in3out boxes first to see which works best under real conditions. rgds WalterT |

I'd probably recommend the Radial 8ox before the Whirlwind offerings. More ways to get in and out, Jensens as an option. I own both with and without the Jensens and there is very little difference in sound between them. The Radial transformers and quite good. --Ben |
