Thread Starter | API for classical/orchestral
Have you ever heard of people using API consoles for filmscores/classical/orchestral mixing? I have some API gear which I love, and have been looking into the 7800 series rack console, but i wonder if it would sound too aggressive for orchestral/film mixing? Thanks! -wolfie |

I use them all the time for orchestral work. They work great. I don't feel the midrange gets out of control at all. For what it is worth the Fox scoring stage had an API Demedio console installed on the stage for probably 30 years until they rebuilt the control room and put in an SSL. Use them and love them, Michael Greene |

I haven't. I have used the 312's, 512's and 3124. I don't imagine from what I have heard that there is enought of a difference in the 7800 to matter. I would imagine that you will love them. I actually like them more than many other pre's because of the mid-range. I like the Grace and MIllenenia on strings but sometimes find they are a bit sterile. It could be my rock and roll roots but I find the API's have a great amount of cut because of the midrange that the other pre's don't have. I usually record a Decca Tree with either the API's or UA-610's as the pre. For me id depends on what the score sounds like but I usually use the 610s (with NOS tubes) for a chocolate creamy sort of sound, or the API's for a really solid tight sound. I never find them to be strident or harsh unless either the players are playing that way or unless the composition is written in that range. Let me know how it goes for you, Michael Greene |

I find the 512c work nice for orchestral work. I also own and use an older 3124 which is my rock n roll box.
