Question Zoom H4, and batteries, trouble?

Hi there

Last night I was hoping to do a worldizing session with some stuff I needed for a short.
I was using a borrowed H4, running on batteries.
I plugged in my Mkh416, turned on the phantom power, and heard this constant high pitched tone, through my headphones???
Turned off the phantom, and the tone was gone.
Needless to say, the session was completely useless.
I tried to put regular power to the H4 when I got home, and everything was fine.

Any of you can help me with this one?

Best wishes and thanks.

Mikkel

This has happened to me before with similar units and onboard phantom power from video cameras. I had to eq, notch out the offending freq.

You can check the Zoom forum Zoom Gear & Home Recording Forum • View forum - Zoom H4, H4n & H2 to see if there's been a firmware upgrade to address that issue.

If not, I seem to recall that an external battery pack is a workaround. Cobble something up that provides the same voltage as the H4 wall wart and apparently that gets around the offending circuit.

Or get the new Zoom H4n which has eliminated the issue.
