Question Recording system (or converters) for studio AND remote

Hey guys, dunno if the thread title is the perfect description....

I got lost during the search for a cheap recording system that i can use mainly
at a studio (which isn´t built yet) and which i can use for 24 track live
recording (not that often).

I want to use an RME ADAT card (favorite choice is the old Hammerfall series, it´s
just perfect for my purpose) when recording at the studio.
For several reasons i´m not a big fan of taking the DAW to the live recording location.
On the other hand it´s too expensive to buy some piece like the Alesis HD recorder.
It would be a great solution if i could use the Alesis (maybe one with the converter
upgrade) as a converter in the studio, but since that piece of gear doesn´t send the
analog input to the ADAT out this plan won´t work out...

Though i never experienced problems with tape based ADAT machines during a live recording,
i´d rather use a wax cylinder machine to capture the live efforts of my clients.

So... what do i do? Am i missing something here? Please, help a lost guy.
Any input is welcome.

Maybe i should add that i´ve been thinking about buying some Behringer ADA8000 converters,
which sound good enough for me (when clocked by the RME). I´d use these in the studio
with my DAW - and i could use these with an older HD Recorder (with ADAT in) which has
poor sounding converters, but just acts as the recorder....

Does this make sense?

Or take a step up with the new/upcoming Audiofire 8 with 8 pre's, firewire and ADAT.

Looks like a decent unit. But i can´t afford those and i think it´ll take some
time before these can be bought second hand.

Thanks for the heads up, though!
