SMPTE time code comes in different flavors.

Longitudinal time code (LTC) is the type you are refering to. It is distributed and recorded as audio. However the tape must be moving to read the time code.

Vertical Interval time code (VITC) gets around the "has to be moving" problem and displays timecode while stationary. It is recorded (embedded) along with each frame of video. You can't treat this one like audio.

Sorry, I don't have recorded LTC. Maybe some one else can chime in. You can get a LTC generator for fairly cheap, if you are serious. If you're recording analog just record to one track to "stripe" the tape. It's common to leave a empty 'guard' track next to it , as the signal bleeds easily. A DAW track won't require the same care, of course.
