Talking Gig Report: Choir Recording in Historic NYC Church

Hi all

I was privileged to work with producer Jeff Lunden and Engineer Christopher Greenleaf on a recording of the Dessoff Choir at St Georges Church on 16th Street. This church is where Lincoln's funeral was held in NYC and was also the church that Dvorak attended when he lived here. I actually remembered to bring my camera (for once) so I figured I'd post a few pic's.

Here is a view of the main mic's and the choir "section" mic's. You can also glimpse the piano mic's. The mains are a pair of DPA 4006TLX's - modified and tweaked specifically for Christopher at DPA. The Soprano and Alto mic's are TLM 193's and the Bass and Tenors have TLM 103's. The piano spots are KM143's.

Here is a view of the control room.

All of the mic's were running through Millennia HV-3 preamps except for the Soprano and Alto spots which were running through an MP-2b. We were running 96kHz/24-bit. The "A" machine was an HD24 which was being fed from an AD16 and the "B" machine was an HD24XR which used its own converters. These were connected to the pre's via Y-cables. The Mackie 1202 monitored the B machine and the 802 (on top of the racks) monitored the A machine. The KRK's were just for playback for the conductor.

The reference mixes were fed through a Mytek Stereo96ADC to two HHB CD-recorders, and Christopher monitored on a Stereo96DAC

Very cool. I have a gig this weekend with a conservatory chamber chorus that I'm greatly looking forward to ... in a nice auditorium, so a bit o' 'verb on the backside might be warranted.

Am curious what mods make for a "TLX" ... never heard of that before.

Cheers!

Michael,

From what I understand it's an upgrade for the classic 4006.
The upgrade the latest components and transformerless preamplifier design.

Christopher has amazing ears and does beautiful work. I worked with him at the Oberlin Conservatory when he came to make a recording. Say hi for me.

Yep, we just got ours back. They're pretty much my new favorite "clean" omni. To me, the 4006's were never something I'd write home about but I loved the 4003's. Now, 4006-TL(X) all the way!

This site is confusing .... it says "upgrade for 4006TL". Is the "TLX" just a 4006 modded to become a 4006TL, or is a 4006TLX something different from a 4006TL altogether?

The New model is the 4006TL.

The TLX is the catalogue number for the upgrade of a 4006 to make it a 4006TL.

Surprisingly not bad - it is right off Stuyvesant Square.

There are the usual sirens and horns from time to time.
