sE refextion filter

I recently bought the SE refextion filter made for vocals. and put a mxl 990 in it and it distorts way easier than out of it,I've positioned it closer in and further out and when I turn down the gain the pick up just sounds weak.
Any Ideas?

Have you tried surrounding the mic with other materials like a sound blanket or foam to see if it does the same thing as the sE filter.

It must be the mic and the distortion is more pronounced when it's baffles.
