Hi everyone, I'm recording a jazz band soon and doing a bit of "websearch" I found this jazz drum technique on DPA's website... Seems really interesting, anyone tried it? As usual budget doesn't leave me much margin to try too many setups. Here's the link: DPA Microphones :: Jazz Drums Also, how would you aproach the placement of the musicians (drums, electric bass, piano and sax mainly) if you could choose between isolated rooms or having them in the same room with gobos?? Looking forward to your opinions, thank! |

It's just a variation of a minimalist pair. I worked regularly in a good jazz studio for a couple years, and we would use at least eight mics. The author is correct that a jazz kit is a different sound and needs different techiques. It's usually just a more intimate sound.

Just read the article, sounds like a good technique to use. The only confusing bit in it is when he recommends placing a mic 2cm from the hihat. I feel like that would be asking for a damaged microphone if the drummer ever gave a good hit to the hat when it was fully open. Any ideas on what kind of position he's talking about here?

Thanks for your replies. Don, when you say at least eight mics you mean varying the standard "mic per drum + OH" concept? What mainly caught my attention is the "inside the kit" placement instead of OHs. Again, thanks for your time! Quote:
