Unhappy The Work, the Performance and then the Sound

A very interesting article - albeit a little dated - about Jimmy Lock who passed away last week.

Hi Larry, yeah I read this it was interesting. Its hard to believe that sort of career experience will ever be possible again in this day and age. Interesting reference to Genex 8000 recorder, and all the Solti Ring stuff. My father still listens to this recording a lot, following with score. Its phenomenal for the day, but I hear dropouts and weird glottal stops in instruments in the CD transfer. The trombones for example at the start of the Ride of the Valkeries.

Thanks for posting the link.

Thanks for that glimpse inside their world.

It's quite saddening to get such a clear sense of his passion and enthuisiasm just after his death and the simultaneous demise of the label.

Jimmy Lock's influence was great and his expertise lives on even in American recording.

The summer music festival where I work uses Schoeps mic arrays specified and designed by Lock for recording. The Pavarotti outdoor and indoor concerts used mic arrays and mixing systems specified by Lock.

Personally, he had a difficult life in some ways. The tributes provided here give a nice sense of a former day when Decca was run as a learning ground and true leader in artistic presentation and technical advancements.

Tony Faulkner told me two weeks ago that he will be doing the final session for Decca as it is now constituted. Those bean counters have had their way with a great label.
