A/V sync in post is more of a hassle than a problem. Just extract the audio from the video, then match it with an equal length segment from the good audio at the right clip points and swap. Too bad it sounds simpler than it is. Given that the audio recorder my run at a different speed than the video. And that the audio on the video is probably significantly delayed due to it's distance from the group, and other factors. You can't really be that off with the A/V sync with music, it's too noticeable.

When I add video to my kit, I'll be inputing the field recorders audio to the camcorder via headphone out and/or RCA outs. It should at a minimum give me something better matched to sync to. And if it's good enough I might not have to do any of that extra work in post.

Anyway, I'm not really seeking employment with my gear until I have at least the video part added to it. Since any bonehead can record video and audio with their cell phone these days. Stick a broom in a chair, duct tape a cell phone to it, and you're recording. A bit redneck, but for many a low end consumer, good enough for them. And probably more flattering to some groups than the higher end gear would be.

Yeah the time delay between camera audio and my audio was wicked bad.

So how do you fix it? Will timecode work? I'd love more detail on how this works...

Trial and Error. Unless you have some form of world clock / adat / timecode / ???

Have enough lead / tail to edit from. Some players, mplayer (mplayerhq.hu), allow you to time shift audio to video on playback. With a long enough clip you can +/- 100ms (1/10th) of a second while playing a clip. I don't recall directly, but it think it's the [ and ] hot keys. (the things your pesky cat shows you). Once you figure out how much it's off, you can better guess at how to fix it.

There probably is some plugin / software somewhere than can do most of the grunt work. But if you can avoid it in the first place, do. It'll save you hours and whats left of your sanity.

If you are recording both the audio and the video in digital you should not have many problems. We do long form concerts (1 hour plus) and the sync may get off a couple of frames by the end of the concert but that is about it. Matching up the audio and video is the hard part. We use a Sony FX1 Camera for the video and a Fostex FR2LE for the audio. Works well in combination.

On a somewhat related note, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on who to approach to try and find some more work on the ENG sound side of things?

I've so far been working primarily as a sound recordist / boom op for short films (though I'm just finishing working on my first ultra low budget feature length film). I love the work, and I've been lucky to have worked with a more experienced sound guy who throws some work my way whenever he's double booked. But! I remain broke! I was thinking it would be great to get some work with the various news crews doing ENG type work as it seems to pay quite well over here in London, but don't really know how to go about getting in touch with the people who hire the crew!

Any suggestions or mildly related schemes for being self sufficient in this side of the audio world would be greatly appreciated!
