Thread Starter | Hey slutz, I have two gigs lined up to record this weekend, and I will be using a Metric Halo ULN-2 and 2882 to record. I am renting most of the mics, so my choices were based mostly off of economic reasons. I am curious which mics you would plug into the low-noise pre's in the ULN-2. Friday's gig (rock/funk/jazzy - small bar/club): Keyboard - 1 sm57 + 1ksm27 Electric Guitar - 1 sm57 Drums - 2 M160's OH, 1 SM57 on snare, M88 on kick (outside hole in skin) Guest Trombone - Senheiser MD441 Saturday's gig (soul, indian, jazz - very small performance room): Harmonium - 1ksm27 Bansuri/Vocals - (split from sm58) Trumpet - Senheiser MD441 Vocals 2 - (split from sm58) Stand up bass - AKG D12E Rhodes Piano - sm57 on cab Drums - 2 M160's OH, 1 SM57 on snare, M88 on kick (outside hole in skin) I am mainly curious about which instruments I should use the ULN-2 pre's for, but any other advice or critique would be great. (I am not sure if my lack of "room" condensor mics is a big mistake. ) Would the AKG D12E sound good in the bass drum for the first night's show (to get a heavier sound)? Also for the keyboard the first night, and the rhodes the second I am not sure to try and mic their amps or just get a splitter. I have a Fender Twin so I could reamp..... A lot of questions, so many thanks for your help |

| I would use the ULN-2 on the M160 overheads. They're certainly the quietest mics in this setup and will require the most clean gain. Your other mics will probably not need more than 10-20dB of 2882 gain. If at all possible get a third M160 for the rhodes cab, this is my absolute favorite microphone for putting on anything from a Champ to a Twin, especially when Rhodes is involved. But if cost is really a hindrance, the 57 will do. Does your upright bassist have a pickup ? if so, do use his signal into an instrument input on the 2882 along with D12E mic. Upright mic'ing with no direct signal can be a bleed nightmare in a live setting.

Thread Starter | Thanks for the quick response. The M160's cost just as much to rent as the SM57s to rent so I can get an extra of those. Would the M160 also be good on on the guitar cab the first night? Not sure about the bass direct....I think he prolly goes to an amp also, so I might be able to split that signal...I just have 10 inputs to work with. The slutz are the best |

| I would throw a M160 or other ribbon the the trumpet. I'd keep the SM57 or the GTR cabinet or see if you can get an MD409 or E906.

Thread Starter | Many Thanks!!!! So it looks like I am going to go this way.... Friday's gig (rock/funk/jazzy - small bar/club): Keyboard - 1 M160 + 1ksm27 Electric Guitar - 1 MD409 Drums - 2 M160's OH, 1 SM57 on snare, M88 on kick (outside hole in skin), D12E inside kick Guest Trombone - M160 Saturday's gig (soul, indian, jazz - very small performance room): Harmonium - 1ksm27 Bansuri/Vocals - (split from sm58) Trumpet - M160 Vocals 2 - (split from sm58) Stand up bass - AKG D12E (I would like to split and go direct also....but since I only have 10 inputs, I'm not sure what I would do this instead of) Rhodes Piano - M160 Drums - 2 M160's OH, 1 SM57 on snare, M88 on kick (outside hole in skin) |

| That looks lovely. Would love to hear some clips of the gig! M160's renting at the same rate as 57's ? Awesome! Now see Steve, this was exactly what i was talking about in the other thread about local rental rates having a direct effect on the services we can offer as remote recordists. |

| It's true, M160s go for double the rental price of an SM57 around here. |
