Hi All Im recording a horn section tomorrow (Trumbone, Trumpet, Alto and tenor sax) and am wanting a few tips on mic selection. I have: 1, Naumann 193 2, 414's 1, Mojave MA-200 1, Solid Tube 1, C3000 2, Rodes N3's My dynamic Mic selection isn't that fantastic: 2, D112's 2, 58's 3, 57's 1, 57 Beta 1, e845 I'm wanting to avoid my live room's acoustic so i'm going to be using baffels to deadening a bit. I thought that placing the players about 3 feet apart and with a mic about 2 feet in front of each player would work quite well. I want to get seperation and control but I don't want to choke the players. Be great to get anyone's thoughts on this. (I'm a virgin to Horn recording!) |

If these are going to be mixed into a Ska/Funk track I'd just use the 57s'

I personally like the dynamics on brass and I like having more than one play into the same mic (except the sax) like the old days. If you want more separation and mixing control then I would try placing the players farther apart or maybe even in a large circle or semicircle so they would be in the nulls and could see each other. You would need a pretty large space though. |

I would start with the 414 on sax, 58 on trombone, and 845 for trumpet. The 845 sounds a lot like a 57/58 but has a smoother top end. If you need more brightness, though, go with the 57.

So, I'm thinking to have 3 large diaphram mic ferther away just in case the room abience works ok and then have the dynamics up close . I was thinking the 414's on trumpet and trumbone and the Solid Tube on the sax Has anyone tried a 193 on horns before?? P.S. Thanks everyone | |
