Talking Multiple location recording for one song - Logistics beyond belief!

Maybe some of you have seen this already, or, maybe it was already posted. If so, I apologize.

This project involves recording "street musicians" from all over the world singing Ben E. King's "Stand By Me". The mix builds as the producers travel the world recording all of these wonderful musicians. Enjoy!

I did something like this for WQCD-FM (CD 101.9) a while back in December of 1989.
It was for their TV and radio ad campaign...

It started off with Bobby Mcferrin signing a tune called "Be Cool" acapella on track.
We went on location and captured a variety of bands and vocalists performing to Bobby's stereo playback track.

The client took the takes back to their studio and put together a number different 30 & 60 second spots that aired around that time.

Some of the artists included on this project were as follows:
  • Basia with Danny White and Sammy Figaroa
  • Bob James
  • David Beniot
  • Lee Ritenour
  • Manhattan Transfer
  • Michael Franks
  • Spyro Gyra
  • Tony Bennett
  • Tuck and Patti

Must be the same producers as the musicians are mostly the same in the videos. Just a different song. Very enjoyable though!

I guess if I went through the trouble of setting up all the equipment and such, I'd like to get a few takes out of it as well! I wonder how much material they are sitting on?

Awesome stuff, very inspiring.

There is a great podcast of Bill Moyers Journal from PBS. They did a feature on this project on October 24, 2008 and there is a great interview of the person that did the documentary. A great interview and certainly worth checking out.

I'm not sure how to link to an iTunes podcast, but I'm sure a search of the iTunes podcasts will find it.

Stand by Me Location recording Project all over the WORLD!

This looks like an incredible project.

Anyone have insight to the process, crew, or gear?

In the early 90s I recorded two records of street musicians, one in Chicago and the other in New York; both were called Streetdreams. The record company went out of business but you can still find copies on Amazon I think. Both were recorded with a Tascam DAP-1 DAT machine and a pair of Sure SM81s. Streetdreams New York has a couple of tracks with Roger Ridley singing Motown classics. We recorded him in the Port Authority bus station – I was usually concentrating on mic position since my rig was handheld, but at one point I looked up and saw a drug bust taking place about 10 feet away. We also started one in San Francisco, but the city was too dangerous. We stopped the record after our gear was liberated from us. There's a clip from the New York record on my website

In the documentary, they talked about the process for the Stand by Me video. Basically, they recorded the guy in the first clip (in Santa Monica, CA) with mics on guitar and vocals and took a DI for the guitar. The recorded it all multitrack. They then took the guitar track as a guide that they would use with all of the other groups. You'll notice that the first guy is just performing and everybody else is wearing headphones.

AFAIK, there wasn't a click (or at least they don't mention it). Just a bunch of folks doing their version of the song to the original guitar track. Then all was edited together to make the final version.

same idea but they start with a topic and create music and mini documentaries as they go.

Here's an example:
