I just won an eBay auction for a Beyerdynamic MC836, short body shotgun. Since this IS GS, I'll admit that I bid on a whim -- and won it for only 20% the street price. ![]() I read that shotguns can be good for upright bass (to keep the drums at bay), and perhaps VO should that come along (there is a near term potential for that). What applications have Remotesters found for shotgun mics besides ENG and EFP? Thanks! |

I don't have many ideas for you except perhaps as a distant spot mic, i.e. where you can't put a mic up close. For example, two shotguns were used last week at the presidential inauguration to record the Chief Justice swearing in the new President.

should read: "two shotguns were used last week at the presidential inauguration to record the Chief Justice flubbing the oath for swearing in the new President" ![]() I'm kinda weird in that i like using a shotgun for a reverse talkback of sorts. Its great for FOH when you're using very dynamic mics with good rejection already and you're able to listen in on the players between songs. I've done this before and this is great for relaying info to the FOH mixer mid-show. Once a kb monitor went out right on the tail of a song, the player had no mic but i could hear him telling the bassist about it. We started from the board, and it was as simple as a loose aux send. So the problem was remedied midway through the very next song. It would have easily taken 2 or 3 songs otherwise but i got the information immediately. Of course this isn't really recording related but the FOH guy loves me ever since, so every tool can be a weapon.

Maybe not remote but, get a BIG mic stand and get that shotgun as high as you can over a drum kit (particularly the snare). This blended in with the kit really brings out the sound of the snare drum rather than the sound of the top skin (which, to me, never sounds like snare). G |

Thanks for the good ideas, folks. I'm itching to try the snare drum application. I'm also thinking about using it as an audience mic -- seems like it should reject the monitor/PA bleed well. |

| I use shotguns for audience mics. I have tried one on a snare a couple other applicatons as an experiment and didn't like them on anything else but crowd.
