Most people in radio know exactly what went wrong.

Corporate advertisers wanted narrowcasting to cover their asses with stock analysts on paper and that led to music radio no longer being entertaining because of multiple dumbed down channels that tried to divide the audience into tight demographic groups.

Great music radio has always by definition been about bringing diverse groups of people together. Everybody knew that there'd eventually be a train wreck.
