Let's put this to sleep finally..... OF ****IN COURSE IT WAS LIVE! It's Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band for rock's sake!.....one of the greatest, most consistent live acts EVER! The Boss & the band KNOW how to do it! PERIOD!

Yes, there was distortion at the beginning, ("Is there anyone aLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE OUT THERE?!?!?!?!") I mean are you to tell me Bruce's gravelly voice WOULDN'T sound like acid eating a kitten alive?!?!? And flat?!?!? Ok, unless any of YOU "top notch rockers" have an audience of 80,000 SCREAMING people and a monitoring system that couldn't possibly be "dialed in", don't tell me you wouldn't have hearing/tonality issues. EAT IT!

And KICK DRUM!?!?!?! Tenth Avenue Freeze Out (the opening song) STARTS with nothing but Kick Drum you idiots!!!!!!!

This was ROCK N ROLL and raw and true at that, at a time when the country and the world need something REAL and organic (am I preaching here?!?!? ). This performance gave me a boner and was awesome! Every time I watch I get a perpetual smile on my face!

BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!

Oh yeah............the fireworks were outta sync and were CGI......as were the Max Weinberg 7/Conan Horns.......as was Bob Costas.....he was a holigram.............

oh yeah, one more thing..............Bruce......lip synch?!?!?!? You guys DO know that in the early days he would NEVER lip synch in videos?!?!? He hated it. He has mostly sung LIVE on most of his videos.

Look at the Born In The USA video.....it was done LIVE and edited to the actual song......Brilliant Disguise, LIVE vocals; remember that one? Better Days..........Streets Of Philedelphia; actually walking through the streets of Philly.....what about Lonesome Day.......

He actually has a well documented history of HATING lip syncing; he's actually not good at it.

"Important News Break":

One of the producers of the Super Bowl Halftime show has confirmed (in print and online) that Bruce and everyone else on the show for that matter performed to a pre-recorded track.

Wake up and smell the decaf.

oh well. Guess I was wrong. Nice how the digital TV misalignment of audio and video works in their favour in this regard.

How long have they been doing this, and has any act ever been fully live at the Super Bowl?

Anyone know, which recording did they use for the Superbowl for Bruce? Was it something pre-recorded in a studio, or something they recorded at the Superbowl location live-ahead-of-time?

I cannot speak for the Super Bowl, but we have done stuff like this.

More times than not, the recording is done in a live environment.
Sometimes at the venue where the broadcast or live capture will be done and other times it's done in another (staged for live) facility or live concert event.

I can say that I've done this a few times in my 33 plus year career and if I'm not mistaken the first time was in the early to mid 80s for a huge band for a major network's summer holiday broadcast.

Then, if applicable it's worked on fixed up and ready for showtime.

More artists than you can imagine do this on a regular basis when it comes to high profile events like the Super Bowl...

It's not just about the quick turn-around time issue I'm afraid.

Sure, the Grambling State University Marching Band at Super Bowls I and II in 1968 and 1969!

But only because wireless in-ears hadn't been invented yet.

I'll bet Carol Channing was live at Super Bowl IV

So you're trying to tell us that Keith Richards 'reharmonizations' during Satisfaction were pre-recorded when the Stones did the Bowl?

I'll have to ask Peter how many RFs were actually working.

Did Clarence's sax sound really loud in the mix to you guys?

Anyone hear the kick?

Bruce & the main backing vox sounded especially live / straying from tune.

A hell of a performance, I bet the truck mix was amazing upstream of the satellite feed.

Good job whoever was there!
36 wireless channels is no big deal at all. I'll bet there were 100+ going in the stadium. You should see the Broadway show rigs!

funny guy.

Anyhow, I did some homework. The NFL has REQUIRED back-up tracks since 1993 according to this article. Apparently Houston's rendition of the national anthem in 1991 was lip-synced. Just wondering if anyone had done anything live since they started using pre-recorded tracks. Apparently Garth Brooks sang the anthem live in 93. Although I'm more interested in the half time performances than the national anthem.

I dunno I find it ridiculous that we can't trust great artists to pull off great performances at high pressure venues. Musicians have been doing this for hundreds of years, are we now a wimpy society of fakers?

Yeah, I'm with you- B'way is my "day job". Yes, most shows have 75+ channels including RF mics, IEMs, RF PL, and walkies, within 250' of 400 other working channels!

But the Superbowl has so much traffic going on, from encrypted comms for each team to the broadcast side, that there is not a lot of room available for the show. That's why they usually have either Jim Stoffo, Pete Erskine, or a similar top-level RF engineer working for months in advance doing co-ord for the show. The show's live RF is miniscule compared to everything going on. Here's an example:

Super Bowl RF - The RadioReference.com Forums

My favorite quote: "5,000 requests to use at least 11,000 different radio frequency devices on 2,000 frequencies."

Cheers!
