how many of your guys have recordings bands on location, meaning outside the studio, in room that are nothing more than people bedrooms, kitchens, or toilets? this at the moment is where the recordings, mainly, happens for me, yes ive worked in studios, but with my own equipment i tend to record at people houses, for practise and mainly for fun. is there anything out there to make rooms better, acoustically? theres always problems with drums, and echoes, shakes, other 'untreated' room problems, is there anything that can help reduce this? depending on price etc, i dont mind if its a duvet on the wall, or £1000 portable treatment. cheers Dom

You can try an SE Reflexon Filter, or a Realtraps Portable Vocal Booth, or my idea to build one of those myself for $30 based off of some other dudes design: Nifty Portable Isolation Idea on the Cheap! Perfect for college dorms? - Gearslutz.com Other than that, you can get office cubicles and put treatment on them. Then you use them as a gobos in a corner to make a booth. All of those work pretty well.

I bet you could have received a lot more replies if you posted your thread in the proper forum... Who knows; may be not, but you never know until you try. Hey, folks can you you give me the heads up if and when you see a thread that should be placed here? Since some folks still don't know about this forum it would be a win win situation for the origination poster and the forum. Thanks!

| Recommend a Portaloo isolation booth, where you can always guarantee to be flushed with success. |

I normally record in churches and concert halls. But I did record an album many years ago in a school hall (instruments) and someone's house (vocals) - digitally overdubbing with a pair of Sony F1 video machines and a PCM-F1 16-bit encoder. All written up in "Music Week" at the time.

Thank you for that idea. Occasionally I'll see those at t neighborhood park here. Next time I do, I'll grab a battery operated recorder and record the "results." If the listener hears any "straining" noises they will most likely not be those made in an attempt to reach a high note. But rather. . . with thanks, Plush-Dhonic

I've done some recording like that. I find it effective to get the musicians in the same room, performing live, concentrating on the quality of the performance. When needed, I've used packing blankets or comforters to help absorb some room reflections, and I've had luck with this product: ModTrap : The Most Versatile Acoustic Panel In The World. Living rooms with carpets and couches can work. Or, if you have a space with a high ceiling, like a garage, that can work too, but you might need more absorption there, depending on the room sound. Dynamic mics or narrow pattern condensers help. |
