I've got a Presonus Firestudio and a Digimax that I use together for 16 tracks total on a Macbook. Love it. I've also got a Lunchbox with 4 more pres to use if I feel a great pre is needed. The Presonus pres sound fine to me though.

Okay gang, I've narrowed it down to the following:

1.MOTU 896

2.RME Fireface 800

3.Apogee Ensemble

For the latter 2, I'll use 4 additional mic pres for remote recording.

The MOTU 896's built in pre's are one of the units biggest limitations. It has a great layout with the best metering in this price range. The fact that it has XLR's for all of it's connections was a really bit asset while I was doing mobile. I would consider the Black Lion mod to be a necessity. It will save you a lot of headaches.

You're missing out big time not having the MH 2882 on that list . . .

The RME Fireface 800 is an excellent computer interface. I use one all the time, and if you have any questions, I'd be happy to speak with you about it.

What's the problem with the pres? What sort of headaches should I expect?

They're dull, slow, and lack resolution. Of course there's no reason why you can't make a decent recording with them, but they'll most likely become a weakest link pretty quick.

Okay gang, I've purchased a Fireface 800 by RME. It was a close call between the MH and the RME. The MH has some useful features that the RME hasn't but the pre's aren't as powerful. Also, I'm not smart enough to navigate the MH straight away. The RME is "plug-and-play". It only has 4 pres, but I've got a few others floating around. Eventually, I'll get 8 more pres with a lightpipe output.

I also got a deal on the RME from Alto Music. $1500, you can't go wrong.

Thanks for all of your input, and special thanks to Allen Rowand for the MH demonstration. It is a very impressive device indeed.

I want to build a mobile recording rack, and i have a simple question. I have read many of tests, forum topics, specifications, but i don't have any experience with preamps, and i can't decide which is the best value for price.

The price range what i can afford is near the Focusrite Octopre (with ADAT),PreSonus Digimax FS...

Any suggestions and opinions are welcome over this preamps, or another good devices in this price range.

This is an old inactive thread--search the forum and you will find more preamp opinions than you can imagine.

That being said, if you run across a used Digimax 48 in good condition for $350 or under, it is a good budget choice. I'm giving it my vote for the best value for price. Anybody else have a candidate for the value leader at that price point?

My two cents worth.

FYI, none of the threads in my forum are old or inactive unless they are closed.
All thread new and old are up for discussion.
It is how it's done around these parts.

Thank you for the search recommondation, but I bet this is how our OP found this thread in the first place.

In any event, it's a great way to get around the forum.
In addition to the search function, clicking on the popular tags is a clean and more direct way of finding what you want since I create each and every tag for each and every thread.

Thanks!

What are you going to plug the preamp/interface into???? A computer, does it have firewire?
I have a Firestudio and a Digimax and like them fine.
