I'm off to the pacific islands to do some remote recording of indigenous musicians. Looking at travelling with Macbook Pro Duo, MH2282 and external hard drive, mics etc. (I want to travel light) There is a generator on site, so I can recharge and edit with mains power, but will need to record long sessions ( several hours perhaps) with generator off. What would you suggest for portable silent power? 12V battery with inverter? UPS battery power? I dont want to rely upon bus power from the mac. Cheers in advance. Pete G |

These guys do astronomy out in the bush and know quite a lot about batteries and power inversions. Battery, Volts, Amps, Fuses, Page 1-- MAPUG-Astronomy.net mediaeval cathedrals with cheap dimmers made me hunt for a completely independent power option. W |

The associations in my mind goes as follows: travel light? I would pack my Sound Devices 722 and a wall charger. Charge at night, record at day. Why bother with a laptop for the recordings? Leave it at the hotel room and edit there (by transferring the files to the computer). Gunnar |

Would not bring a laptop to an island either if I could avoid it... Or will you do overdubs? Did some recordings last summer in the middle of nowhere and used a portable solar panel and Sony charger to charge the battery for my SD744T. Worked great! You can get up to 8 tracks in a rugged field recorder, built for moisture and sand... Martin

As others have said, ditch the laptop!

Thank for the replies so far, def heading down the 12V with recharging path. Solar, or generator. And, I take on board the no laptop thing, except I will be doing some overdubbing. Still, it's easier (i hope) for me to carry this gear in, than to get them all on a plane out of there! PeteG |
