Talking CAT5 in remote recording

Hi all
Have looked at the TAGGED threads and I still need to ask the question. I have found this product and was wondering if it would be suitable for remote use. Picture this. A rack of the 3 unit modules next to the splitter with a CAT5 cable running out to the Van or the recording box where its plugged into the reciever component.

So there is my dream...is it fluff or is this a realistic option

I found this mobile from a different thread here at GS and the bonus is that their HO is just up the road from where I work. I have spoken to the owner of the company and I am going to visit over the holidays. This is where I need your help ...I have no idea how it works or what are the critical questions to ask to check its audio "quality". Can I get your feedback/help on doing this "review".

In the meantime if we dont speak beofre the holiday break...I wish you all a HAPPY HOLIDAY AND A MUSICAL NEW YEAR.

Mick

I use a similar product called Instasnake from Energy Transformation Systems, Inc. Sorry cant work out how to post a link

The only catch it that it requires screened cat5/6 cable to enable Phantom Power. But it is a dream to use.

This product is converting analog to digital and then back to analog. Then you are probably converting it back to digital to record it. Depending on the quality of the A/D and D/A converters, all this conversion could add some artifacts to your audio.

A better solution would be to find a product that would convert to digital at the source, then run that digital signal directly to the recorder.

I think it would be better to with some reliable product, such as Ethersound, for example. Using devices from Digigram or Yamaha, you'll get decent conversion and capture device. From the point of encoding to ES, you can run CAT 5 directly to your DAW and the only analog will be monitoring your recording. So far we had good experience with both installed and remote recordings via ES system.
I'm not an expert on network audio, though.

Personally I would get the RME unit and A/D at source and then run MADI back.

If recording on a laptop use the new RME MADIFace.

I've used Ethersound with great results... Convert to digital and use the NAI48ES. Digigram also has a similar product. It requires a bit of setup from a software perspective, but once it is going, it is really solid. You just need to be careful to assign correct master/slave settings.
