| His Glow in the dark tour was a great live performance, but then again, he wasn't sodomizing autotune either at that time. ![]() The dude has talent, just not in the singing department, I bet this experiment will fizzle out and he will go back to what originally made him sucessful, rapping and making soulful beats |

| Singing is being a musician and is what music is all about..........rapping is not a skill or a talent whatsoever. There is nothing musical about it other then the beat.......which looping samples any ****** can do.I get ton's of rappers every year in my studio and not one of them has any concept of pitch at all.Kanye west is just a fabricated tool that a record label created.Obviously the videos tell the truth and nothing but the truth. The jackass should be waiting tables instead of being on any record label.LOOK AND LISTEN TO THE VIDEO PEOPLE! That f#cknut is a joke!

I disagree with the statement that rapping is not a talent. It's not as easy as it looks. I used to think the same thing about record scratching until I was alone in the studio with a turntable and my curiosity got the better of me. Not nearly as easy as it looks.

I've made the mistake of telling rappers to take another because of tuning issues. They laughed. It's supposed to be attitude in the music. I've recorded rappers who can actually sing, but record this way to create an atmosphere of bad-ass in the track. Well, I never say anything, but it's far from bad-ass if you're trying to portray someone you're not. So much for "Keeping it real" | |

That song posted on page 2 was his second attempt on SNL. It was bad, but his first performance YouTube - Kanye West - Love Lockdown - Saturday Night Live 12/13/08 SNL would be hard to beat in a VFW Karaoke contest for the deaf.

I actually really like Kanye as a producer - I think "College Dropout" has a number of excellent moments - and "Jesus Walks" stands out particularly to me as one of the best tracks written in the past few years. I just don't particularly like his flow - it always seems a little stilted compared to so many others out there - but that's just me - I'm kind of still waiting for someone to even come close to Rakim's delivery. ![]() Anyway - it's kind of sad that for youngsters that have a limited sense of pop culture history that peeps like T-Pain are getting lauded for innovating the "robot voice" vibe - when in fact it's well over 20 years old, with lots of cuts from the 70's and 80's with vocoders and talk boxes front and center - which also seem now somehow more "organic" than the current extreme auto-tuning atrocities. To my old skool ear Zapp did it back in the day with way more funk than the current upstarts who don't give them the credit - check out one of my favorite Troutman joints at YouTube - Heartbreaker--Zapp to hear what I mean. Best regards, Steve Berson |

| Kanye performance Didn't he say recently that he was "The voice of this generation"Jeeez if he is...no wonder there are so many problems in the world He certainly reflects that. What an inflated idiot!! I dunno it seems as if he has plenty of ego and attitude, like most rappers these days...but stuff all talent. I prefered the earlier dudes like Grandmaster Flash etc... But anyway thats a crap song to begin with...even if it had been sung well by somebody else it still would have sucked big time, there was lots of drums and presentation and vocoder and attempts at originality, but completely empty at the core of it all. Maybe he should go on American Idol...nah he would get eliminated in the first round |

It sounded like a ******** kid singing while eating cereal. I was trying to figure out what was wrong the whole time. I heard the autotune, yes, but they also had his dry vocals coming in loud and clear too, which was an absolute travesty. And i heard his main vocals cut out a couple times, to reveal the rooms background vocals. Technical error? I thought, surely, they'll fix whatever the problem was on the second song, Then, they did the same exact thing, again. Not only was the performance piss poor sonically, but visually as well. He stood in front of a screen the whole time and danced around in place like a drunk sorostitute. |

To be fair, it did start out as a discussion of the production and use/misuse of autotune. It just became clear that there is so much more wrong than that. All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't help this train wreck.

Doesn't he have any good friends around him to tell him he can't sing? I think his ego is gonna finally kill him. |

He KNOWS he can't sing - that's why he's trying this whole auto-tune thing as a gimmicky approach to finding some middle ground. He obviously got what he wanted on the record (I don't like the result myself, but I'm not a Kanye fan anyway). But clealy he hasn't worked out how to make it work for live performance. I don't think the guy is stupid. Just off track and getting way too far away from what he knows how to do. Again, I'm not sure what that is, but he attained his level of success through being able to do SOMETHING that a pretty large audience responded to. I remember seeing Neil Young on the Trans tour in 1983 (?), using sequencers, vocoders and a pre-recorded video tape of himself singing the back-up parts at a solo gig in Madison Square Garden. Same kind of thing. All Neil really needs to do is play guitar and sing, but he went way off the rails with that stuff and it was embarassing. All Kanye needs to do is rap or produce or wear funny sunglasses or whatever the hell his core talent is, but he's stretching to try something else. And it ain't working. |
