Hello, I'm a musician and I have a small home studio, essentially made to record my own musics and performances. I work with classical music, and I'm used to record on 8-16 tracks with Focusrite devices (2610) and a laptop PC. I simply connect all the mikes to Focusrite's preamps and record all on several tracks, because I can't mix anything live (as I'm the conductor of the orchestra!) So I always do the mixing later, at home.In the last month I recorded my last cd (with Saint-Saen's Christmas Oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra) and mixed & edited it with Yamaha NS10-M studio ... I found them simply amazing for classical music! The mix and edit went wonderful, and the translation to other speakers is fantastic... I loved to work with Yamaha's. Here's my question: I'd like to buy NS10-M, but I couldn't find them in good conditions ... and people ask too much money (as they are super-requested) so I think nowadays they are not worth the price... I'd like to buy some brand new passive monitors sounding like NS10 ... I have an Audiolab 8000A amplifier, which sounds awesome for classical, so I'd prefer not to get active monitors (like HS50 or HS80). Is there a brand new passive monitor sounding like NS10 nowadays? Thank you |

Although they do not sound anything like the NS10s, have you ever listened to the K&H 0300s? Yes, they are active and nothing like the NS10s, but I figured I'd chime in anyway. So, in advance if I wasted your time.

Why don't you try to get a well designed monitor that tell you what's on your HD? /Peter |

NS10s. I understand the appeal, but I've never really been a fan. I don't know where you're based, but why not try and get a demo of any of the dozens of great "bookshelf" hifi speakers out there? B&Ws perhaps? Dynaudio? Spendor? Or maybe the passive PMC monitors? There just aren't a lot of passive monitors around these days... and virtually all small speakers are ported now, so don't really sound like an NS10 (which isn't necessarily a bad thing in my book). But I think the hi-fi world is your friend at times like this. Heck, the NS10 was originally meant to be a hifi speaker anyway. |

Thank you for your replies. I actually have at home and/or tried and listened monitors and hi-fi speakers like Genelec, Spendor, KRK, AR, and others, included a pair of old Celestion Ditton 66 mkII. All of these are pretty good for listening music, which IMHO is quite different from mixing and editing. I never tried NS10 before, and they immediately sounded great for mixing and editing, putting ahead the more problematic frequencies in the mix. Also editing is great with NS10, they show immediately if cut points are still audible or well crossfaded. I never would use NS10 to listen music, but I found them perfect for working on my masters. So I was wondering if there are nowadays passive monitors like 'em... |

Randomly saw this thread. You might want to check out "Studiospares" Studiospares SN10 Nearfield Monitors Pair at Studiospares. They are recreations of the original NS-10. This was posted some time ago, and I personally have no experience or knowledge of them, but they are cheap. Might be worth it to check out.

The SN-10s: Are they cheap or inexpensive monitors? Does anyone have experience with them? |
