Question wireless transmitting problem

hello

I am running sound on a low-budget documentary, using two sennheiser ew 100 GS wireless microphone systems. Occassionally, I will receive a very short blast (less than a 1/2 second) sharp blast of what sounds like white or pink noise. I'm using squelch (on low setting) and have still received the same blast when using an pilot tone. Quite mystified at this point.

Thanks
Dave

Sounds like external interference.

Where are you and what frequency are you using?

It could be that you are on an illegal frequency and are receiving interference from a legitimate user of that band.

If you are in Europe and have a version "E" - make sure you put it on memory bank 8 - those frequencies (863.1 to 864.9 MHz) are legal all over Europe without a licence.

Quality of transmitting frequencies vary greatly

The G2 is an excellent product for the price...some call it the bottom rung of professional quality. I would agree.

I have 3 of them and with the addition of high quality lav mics such as the Sennheiser MKE -2 series or Countryman B6 these units preform quite well....BUT! Yes there is always a but at this price point.

The G2 units are single diversity and thus are prone to slip in and out of range much easier resulting in the sharp static that everyone with these units is familiar with.
Because of the large number of useable settings, spend time carefully testing out every single useable frequency. Eventually you will find the most reliable ones. Then reserve them in a common bank. Of the 3 that I have, two are now fail safe and never let me down. The other is very reliable within closer proximity.

Some thoughts about RF...

First response: are you positive it's not contact noise from something rubbing against the lav element?

If it's not physical, then it sounds like classic intermodulation. What do you see at the receiver during this burst?

Where are you doing this? (USA? If so, what state & city?)
What frequencies are you using? Are they too close to one another?

Have you done a frequency check, or tried spacing the frequencies apart?

Are there any other nearby wireless devices (such as cellular phones or wireless dmx) that might have short duration/burst and interfere, or is it possible your wireless mic is slightly out of transmission range?

Are you able to duplicate the problem with the transmitters close to the receivers?

Cheers,

Jim van Bergen

This is not correct.

G2 receivers are true diversity with two complete receivers in the box feeding a single analogue output stage.

If you have a G2 pocket receiver, however, with a single antenna; this is non-diversity.
