Thumbs up Happy Birthday, Mr. Carter

Well, someone needs to send the kudos out: Elliot Carter turns 100 today and continues to write great music (some would argue his best work has been his most recent).

A little inspiration for all of us composers out there. Imagine that Carter was already middle-aged when he wrote his first string quartet. Puts things into perspective and provides hope for us all!

Yes, I heard him interviewed on BBC Radio 4. What a guy. He said that the big drawback of his birthday celebrations was that they kept him away from his current projects. He is still so keen to crack on.

Indeed, Happy Birthday! Carter rocks! I discovered his song cycle _A Mirror on Which to Dwell_ when I was about 16 or so and have been a fan ever since. This week would also have been the 100th anniversary of the late Olivier Messiaen - kind of interesting that two powerhouse composers of the last 100 years were born within a day of each other!

I almost forgot about the Messiaen centenary since it's been actively celebrated for the past year now.

A Mirror on Which to Dwell is some of my favorite Carter. I also really like some of the 80s/90s era chamber works, especially solos, that distill his language into its purest and most accessible from: Scrivo in Vento comes to mind as an especially beautiful example.

No one says it better than Daniel Barenboim in this journal entry:
