Question Shock Flight Case Racks?

Hi All,

I would appreciate any advice regarding short hop flights within the UK and UK to EU.

I need to travel in a couple of weeks with a 5 or 6U rack package, and it will be with one of the budget carriers a la easyjet/ryanair, etc.

I have an expensive preamp, a reasonably priced AD/DA and a cheap FW interface (which I have flown with in a rackbag before without any trouble, but it is not a huge loss if damaged. The preamps on the other hand...too much risk for a rack bag in the hold).

They are currently bolted into a standard ply laminate rack 'flight' case, with proper butterflys and steel corners, etc. but I'm a little worried about airport handling once it goes out of my hands. I have travelled with a bass guitar in a full foam lined aluminium and ply laminate case before and am quite confident with the protection I get from that, but with the rack preamps, if the rack case gets dropped there is no shock protection and the equipment will have the full force of the blow transferred to it. So I assume I should get a shock rack or a foam lined inner rack/outer case.

But I would like to know if others have had bad experiences flying with a standard ply laminate rack case?

Thanks and Regards,

Dave C.
