Just wondering as I've come up with my own thin stand and I'm wondering how yours compares.
My stand is about 12 - 14'. I gaffers tape it to a regular cheap tripod mic stand for a base. This gives me another 6' should I want it. It is black carbon fiber. I got it for free from a friend who has a kite shop and these were odd pieces he was not going to use. He refused any money. Small rod fits into small tube which fits into larger tube. Each piece is ~4'. The smallest, the rod, is a little larger than the diameter of a wooden pencil lead. It is a "shadetree" version of the elegant job that Petrus did. His is how it should be done. Mine is how it can be done and still work. My crossbar is ~50cm, the Williams max for omni separation from his studies and cited in "Stereo Zoom." http://www.rycote.com/images/uploads...honic_Zoom.pdf If you want omnis at FOH with almost zero sight line disturbance and easy rigging, this is a good way to do it.

NB - I use the skinny DPA microdot cable extensions to add 5 meters length. Star quad would pull that stand right down. I also put a dab of gaffers tap at intervals down the stand to keep it neater.

Cheers

How audible is the mic stand among other resonance sources? does it make any sense to use carbon fiber with all mics, or just sdc omni?

i am asking because i use small numbers of mics and want the best quality, but still some ldc and ribbons, spot mics blending into the mains.

Somewhere in the original thread about 4060's and Onno Schulte (sp?) there is a quote that Onno felt carbon fiber had the lowest resonance. I can add nothing to that but hopefully someone can. I used the carbon fiber because it was indicated, readily available, worked well and cheap. I just carry the four pieces, three vertical and a cross piece, loose and assemble them in the field. Small, light, flexible. Entirely in keeping with the DAP 406n mics.

Resonance is one of those words that is commonly used to explain vague but somewhat intuitive concepts of motion in various situations.

In this case, a mic stand resonating from acoustic excitation (very tiny amount of energy) and then corrupting the mic's response due to displacement of the capsule is all a bit undocumented.

Let's see the test data.

Carbon fibre tubes used as mic stands or boom poles transmit and pick up
much fewer vibrations than ones made out of metal. If you make some quick comparisons it will remove any doubt. It has become standard on high quality boom poles. Carbon fibre is also much lighter. A mic stand company
with good marketing could do well to redesign mic stands with carbon fibre.
