I left the house, left iTunes running, and came back. Charles Mingus' "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady" greeted me home. I hadn't listened to it in ages. AGES! Holy crap, I love this recording. Such depth. Such passion. Pop music is a wasteland compared to this record. (And don't get me wrong, I love pop music... well, the good kind )But DAMN!!!! Mingus, for ever and always, amen. |

yaya indeed. Those are great recordings. Tom Dowd's Mingus recordings for Atlantic make me weep. Pithencantropus Erectus (or however you spell)... listen to that one. and fables of faubus w/ mingus and eric dolphey. goosebumps.

Yes yes. And check "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" for excellent late-period Mingus.

Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is astounding. I listened to that last month, driving around with my iPod on. It's great late Duke type writing with a 60s Mingus flare.

Have you read the book Beneath the Underdog? I've read it twice now, it's interesting and fun. Interesting look into his psyche.

I really love "Mingus Ah Um". The horns on "Goodbye pork pie hat" and "self portrait in three colors" are like butter. I'll have to check this one out.

Sorry for the necropost, but I just happened upon a page featuring GS's very own Henry Robinett's bio, and saw he "lived and studied with jazz great Charles Mingus." WOW! Would you care to share any anecdotes, Henry?

"Tonight at Noon" LP spinning just now, oh yeah! Oh, just realized I have it on CD too, oops. If you don't already know him, you should throw an ear to William Parker. Maybe in duo with drummer Hamid Drake would be a good starting point. |

![]() I lived with him during his last years, unfortunately. But during that time a lot of luminaries were dropping by for one reason or another. Joni Mitchell, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, Leonard Feather were some of the people coming by while I was there. There was even an exciting moment of him calling Thelonious Monk. Dexter lived downstairs so we had dinner several times. Exciting times to be sure.

Rashied Ali passed away on Wednesday. I don't think he ever played with Mingus at least on the record. I saw him on stage less than a year ago with William Parker and Charles Gayle. Let's listen to "interstellar space" the duet album with J. Coltrane in his memory! |

The black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of my favorite record for both sound and music, too bad some of Mingus' album or live recording lack sometime of sound quality. Mingus has always been one of my music hero, because he can bring something different and very musical. his compositions and arrangements are quite interesting, not so often we can hear tempo changing dramatically as he did, also great sax rythmics (forgot the name of the tune) and hilarious song names. PS: Henry, damn I wish I was his cousin too !!!

![]() It must have been very exciting indeed! And inspiring too! His discography is pretty immense, but so far the records I own, I love them. "MingusMingusMingusMingusMingus" is probably my favourite. "I X Love", "Celia", "Theme for Lester Young"...
