I want to post a couple of choir recordings I did in a couple of concerts. The choir and church is the same. The first one is not very good even for my standards!!! I was too far and used my Gefell 691/m93 omnis (only mics at that time). The second time I put my KM84s much closer and I much prefer the result. The mikes went directly to my Korg MR-1000. Any critique is very welcome! |

Thanks for posting. I'd actually prefer something between the two perspectives ... the second one is a bit too "present" for my taste. But yes, the first one sounds like it was recorded from the church across the street. ![]() I just got done with a two-day gig recording the Bach B-minor with top-notch conservatory singers, chamber chorus and orchestra. If I can get permission, I'd like to post a couple snippets.

Thanks for answering! In the second sample I tried to compress and I obviously think I got carried away, I hear all rumours!!! Tomorrow I will try to compress less and post it! ![]() Quote:

I like both clips. Very relaxing with the distant recording and the closer one impresses with increased detail. Nice! Great inspiration, I will try to record choir the comming weeks. /Peter |

OK, I don't know well how to "master" it. So I thought I'd better ask your input, you can download the raw version here.

I preferred your second perspective. Very nice "room to choir" ratio! The room was very nice, too. I did hear a few "stickie outie" voices, but that's more the choir than the recording. Nice work!

I liked them both! But somewhere in the middle would be the best in my opinion. The first is indeed too roomy, the second is a little to close for my taste. I like to hear the blending of the choir in the church acoustics. I love a good choir! Although the music is way outdated, the blending of the voices is magical....

My responsability is only about the recording, yes, they are very very "classic". You can listen to the raw version, it's a lot less present, because it wasn't compressed! |

I agree a cross between the two would be nice. I recently recorded a choir in holland and found a good spot about 4m (maybe more) back nice and HIGH, looking over the conductor. The further back, the better the internal balance but worse the clarity, as i think you found. Putting the mics quite high up evens out the distances of the individual singers voices to the mics! The second recording of yours, the ladies in the front row sound much much closer than the men in the back. If you're only using a stereo pair in front of the choir, make sure the organ is loud and comes through on the recording! Helps the choir with their intonation too ![]() Just my 2p, All the best with it all. |
