Talking Choir Recording @ Archon

About 2 months ago, Rob King and I recorded a choir for one of his game soundtracks at my place. 12 guys and 12 girls recorded separately in 2 sessions. We wanted to post some pics and samples for a while now but got too busy to do so...at this point I don't know about bouncing the samples but maybe you guys would dig the pics...

The setup was:

3x Gefell UM75 Decca Tree
3x Wunder CM7 Decca Tree
2x Schoeps CMC64 ORTF
2x DPA 4011 OTRF
2x Royer R122V AB
2x Senn MKH800 AB
1x Royer SF12 Blumlein
1x AEA R88 Blumlein

Pres where MartechMSS-10's, GML8304, Neve1084's, API512C's, ShadowHillMonoGamma's and Aphex 1100.

Question That's a lot of mics...

Thanks for the pics.

Which of those did you actually end up using?

Can you describe the mixing?

Love the pics. Sorry you are forced to work in such an impoverished studio.

For the mix down I prefered the sound of the Gefell UM75 Tree with the overdubs using the Schoeps MK4's ORTF on the Male choir and the Wunder CM7 Tree mixed in with the DPA 4011's (Overdubs) on the Womens Choir. All the counter point vocal parts were a combination on the AEA R88 or Royer SF12 and the Sennheiser MKH 800's. The Royer 122V's never made it into the mix.

We mainly used the Martech MSS-10's, GML pre's and the Neve 1084's. To be honest all the mic combinations sounded pretty good and I think the Gefell UM75 has to be one of the best sounding microphones for instrument recording ever made (and we have had the pleasure of listening to a HUGE amount of mic's over the years). We have acquired 4 of these mics and they get a workout. In the mix we used a couple Bricasti M7's for the Halls. I will see if I can get a couple soloed Choir clips to post...Can't make a promise right now though. All in all it was a great session and we had some good times! BTW The room at Archon sounds wonderful.

Yes, the Gefell UM75 is an amazing microphone. Its a shame people don't really know about them... or maybe it works to its advantage as a limited edition secret weapon kinda thing
