Grab an XtraBoom. You'll love that you have it even when you aren't doing M/S. Picture: ![]() ![]() Alternatively, Jeff's been making the "Lil Nubble", which is a 12" double sided XtraBoom. I'm not sure this would work with the M160/M130...still a nifty bar nonetheless. Picture with a Blumlein configuration: ![]()

| Those aren't heavy mics. You could use something light like a Sabra Som stereo bar. But, the AEA, Coles, etc shure matches the style of the Latch Lake stand better... The hard part about that pair is that the mic bodies will be at right angles to each other - more like a traditional X-Y turned and flipped. -tINY |

| Rycote - Home Page Hi Try Rycote as above. They have a support for various M/S microphone set-ups which is ideal for the job. I use them, and they are really easy to set up, and light on the end of a stand. A really well thought out jobs. All the best |

I'm also seeking tips for a specific M/S Beyer M130/M160 mounting suspension? I can't see which Rycote (recommended above) would do it and how. Looks like I could do it with Sennheiser MKH mounts (MZD30/MZS40 combo) but they're expensive and I'm not sure they'd fit the little Beyers. EDIT: After a bit more searching... with the help of the fantastic Canford Catalogue I've answered my own question. There's a Suspension Compatibility Chart in there that says for the Beyer M130/M160 combo I need the Rycote 40203 Modular Suspension (Stereo). Unhelpfully there's no such info on the Rycote site or even a pic of this. Anyway - I'm ordering one right now plus a Connbox 3 to take the weight of the mic cables.

Beyerdynamic makes the MAV 802, I do not own it, but I think it could work for MS with both mics on the same side... -jon

Hi Zoom, I think you will have problems with this as is. The shockmount looks as if it's designed for use with the remote heads as it's only a single hoop - designed for the mics as mounted it would have two hoops. Also:- The mics are not straight. The cables are stiff, pulling the mics out of alignment and will transmit loads of handling noise to the microphones. I would suggest you really need a ConnBox to sort out the cables and, ideally, add a second hoop to get it right. I will post pics of my Rycote rigs in a moment.

I have two main MS setups - both Rycote. The first is based on the INV-7, but with the standard Lyres removed and replaced with the dual Lyre designed for the Rycote on-camera mounts. This Lyre is slightly stiffer and supports an MS pair nicely - it will hold any mic. from 19mm to 25mm in diameter and is shaped so that it also holds well the "square" Sennheiser MKH microphones. I then use a couple of standard Rycote double clips to hold the mid mic on top. As Rycote do these double clips in several versions it will be easy to get the clips for virtually any MS combination. This is not in the official Rycote catalogue (yet) but they will supply - you just need to tell them it's the InVision MS that I designed and let them know what dual clip sizes you need - I think it's about £40 +VAT retail. I also have a stereo basket windshield system with a mount similar to that posted by "zoom" above. However - now Rycote do the Lyres (which are vastly better than the rubber O-rings) I modified my mount in the same way as I described above. As you can see, I use the stereo ConnBox with this mount and I am pleased that this set-up holds the rig in the centre of the windshield just like the original mount. Not pictured - but when I turned the rig on its side there was very little sideways droop at all. This set-up should work equally as well for the Schoeps MS rig that zoom has, as well as for many other similar sized rigs. I am very happy with this and sent pictures to Rycote of my changes - so they know all about it. |

hi john, i see this problem. this is the older rycote suspension which is quite soft. on my photo it is due its positioning out of alignment but it was stable, without any impact noise, because it was on a stand and not moved. meanwhile for an operation on a boompole i use very lightweight connectors/connbox and a thin stereo cable which is forseen to be used originally for this suspension. it works fine. i will try the new plastic suspensions soon, which are much less expensive btw and have not the problem with ageing like the rubber... stefan |
