I'm creating a personal mobile recording rig using an SKB studio flyer 4U, and want to put an external HD in the back of the case. I just want something to live back there so that I don't always have to connect a drive every time I set up my system for recording/playback. I don't care if the HD has a wall wort or not since it will be staying in the case. My main concern is reliability and durability. Does anyone know of a good, dependable external drive that will be able to handle a few bumps while in transit?

They might not be a good match in terms of capacity or price, but this is where SSDs really shine. They are (roughly speaking) shockproof. -synthoid |

the Antec enclosure is good, but the new ones are NOISY. Whir, hum, all that. The first run was very quiet. $60 is also a bit too much for one. it is good to remember that you can use your own external enclosure, and choose the specific hard drive that works best for you. |

So I'm thinking about one of these two. Anyone think that one of them will do ok living in the back of a portable rack? 250GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro 7200RPM Ox... (MAU4S7250GB8) at OWC 250GB OWC Mercury Elite 7200RPM Combo... (OWCME2FW7250GBJ) at OWC |

I have both and never had a problem with each, but I would go with the Aluminum model. The plastic case is blocking heat from escaping from the drive on the other one. Also, the aluminum model is more "future-proof" with it's eSATA connection.
