Question jazz group recording

hey guys, sup. how are you?

i just talked to a jazzgroup playing here in antwerp to do a recording. its my 1st time to record jazz, and im very excited to do this.
its drums/piano/sax and double bass.

to my idea i want to set up

piano : 2x mk105
bass : aea r92 ribbon
sax : brauner phantom
drums : km 184 (OH) nayant XY (behind drummer) and i got only a 421 for the kick (is that possible??) HH mk 102 cardroid. and i need to rent a 421 for the bottemsnare. do i need to closemic the toms?? for jazz i dont think so.

so i still got 1 mk102 left over, i was thinking to put it also on the dbl bass (bit higher). or can i use it for the snare? drums?

all feedback is welcome. greetz Peter

Why not share them with the rest of us?

You should get good results with using those mics in the right way. If you have enough space, you might want to apply the Glyn Johns drum mic setup, you will almost certainly get a great sounding drum. Just make sure you don't get too much bleed from the other instruments. No need to closemic the toms. The Phantom on sax is cool as well. Just make sure to doublecheck everything before the show begins, and don't hesitate to make little adjustments to the mic placing, as it can make a huge difference for the recording, as I'm sure you know.

Sounds good.

You might want to consider using the AEA ribbon on sax and the Phantom on the bass. I'd skip the hat mic in favor of a top snare mic (don't mic it too close though). The bottom snare mic is also a good idea as it will help bring out the ghost notes and expressive snare stuff that many jazz players incorporate.

I'd definitely use the MK-012's up just above where the neck meets the body. I just tracked double bass on a bluegrass project and used it along with a LD condenser at the bridge. The mic at the bridge has more of the oomph and the MK-012 gets more of the bouncy string tone. I haven't started mixing the project yet, but I think it's a nice combination given that I can mix the 2 for the tone I want. I would also play with mike placement a good bit. I initially used a Avant CV12 in omni, but didn't like the sound. My room is treated, but the bass just lacked that good bottom end. I had better results with the mic in cardioid and a little closer to the bridge rather that farther back as some might suggest. It will depend on the instrument as well, so I'd definitely use your ears and mess with the placement. Bluegrass is not my thing, but it's without a doubt the most enjoyable music to track that I've done (including jazz)....
