Of all the cases & bags I use and supply to my video production clients, I really like Kata's line of semi-soft bags.

For stands, look at these pages on their web site:

The Palms, Multilong, Tripo and Hexabags are great for stands.

This thread rules! Thank you all for sharing the wealth... And to think I was looking through shitty ski bags on EBay...

Any chance of making this a sticky? You can delete my post of course!

Yeah that guy deleted the thread, changed his pricing slightly ($100 -> $125), and seems reluctant to name manufacturer for some reason...???

But I digress. A couple of newbie questions for you rackmount experts. I'm only just *considering* the move to remoteness... And a very "low end" level of remoteness at that.

1) If you were absolutely *not* going to ever fly to your gigs (i.e. driving to local gigs / rehearsal spaces / etc only), would you cut corners on shockmounting etc?

2) As I think Alphajerk has requested, brand names please! There are numerous companies other than SKB and Anvil. Any success or failure stories with any of them?

(Personally I'm considering 3 racks -- 1x16U for DAW / mixer, 1x12U for pres and 1x6U for DIs / headphone amp. The mic pres rack in particular would be hot, as would the A-D / D-A (only 1U) in the DAW rack. Tight sides = bad.)

Thanks!

My gigs are me, a bunch of kit, and a large hatchback. I have an HD24XR and 24-channel monitor mixer racked up together in an 8U non-shockmount SKB. Plus a lot of other stuff.

But that SKB is the biggest case I carry around, and although shockmount would be nice, I would get pretty bored pretty quickly carrying an 8U shockmount case. Those extra inches tip it over the edge as it were (both in terms of picking the damn thing up single-handed, and squeezing it into the car).

The SKB is also light enough to not contribute too much to the overall weight. The kit is heavy enough as it is thanks, and I have a flight of stairs to carry it up every time.

I have an anvil-type 6U shockmounted rack and I don't much enjoy lugging it about even when it's empty! It stays at home these days.

Anvil cases also protect your gear great... but they beat the crap out of anything else they come into contact with - car interiors, door frames, walls. If you're shifting full-on flight cases, get a properly lined van or truck. Or a very very cheap car!

Because I'm doing (or supervising) most of the loading/unloading, I'm confident it's not getting thrown around badly. If I was flying with this kit though, I would certainly go shockmount. I like the "inner rack and flightcase sleeve" approach, and will do that more if I start travelling further.

Did that help or make things worse? :-)

I found another thread about road cases from 2002 so, I thought I should keep the merging thread effort in play. It shows up chronologically...

Check it out... It's the first bunch of posts...
