Thoughts?
Naturally, this depends on the listed value on the packing slip/customs paperwork. Google US Customs.

Well....yeah....but I don't miss it as much as I'd miss $1200 right now!

Yeah -- we passed on the PGA2500 (the TI chip that you are talking about). We were not 100% happy with its performance for a fully specified professional preamp. The ULN-2 preamp outperforms it (and sounds better).

So, what you're saying is that the OP really needs a ULN8 (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

I'm glad you commented on the TI chip, BJ. I've been curious if that chip was under consideration when you were putting the ULN2 together.

I have thought about the apogee, but am going for the 2882 for its software. I have heard that there can be some driver issues with the apogee. Now that could be just rumors though.

As for the ULN8... I had heard rumors that it was on the horizon. Lets just say it should be.

Anyway, I have scored a 2882 for a good price and now am looking at some pres. We will see what happens. Thanks for all your help. I will be sure to help out where I can to return the favor.

A few more questions:

Has the 2882 seen a converter update with new shipping 2D units, or do the converters themselves date back to when the unit was first introduced (or were updated sometime since)?

Does the 2882 have a fan? Does the Ensemble have a fan?

Thanks.

The Analog portions of the 2882 have received some small updates over the years, but there was no change with the introduction of 2d (although the clock was changed).

The 2882 does not have a fan (nor does the ULN-2).

recordsmith please tell us your progress on the preamp and recording front

I am currently looking to upgrade my 2882 non DSP with the 2D expanded option and I found this great thread of yours. Which mic pres did you end up with? Please share some samples. Here is a live recording I made thru the 2882 record panel with 3 vocalists on handheld EV N/D967 dynamics and a Royer R121 ribbon on stage for the 2 percussionists and a guitarist. Lots of effects via Logic... probably too many!

One of the unsung features of the 2882 and ULN2 is the record panel, which is integrated into the MIO software and allows you to record ANYTHING going into or out of your 2882 or ULN2 including the virtual mixes and DAW sends. It is the awesome.
